noons. Monday night games on ABC are a different situation. In both conferences, the respective networks are supposed to televise any road game of a team back to its home city. The Jets are in the American conference, which is NBC's responsibility for coverage. New Haven is the playing home of the New York Giants, least until they move to New Jersey.

Therefore, when the Giants and Jets meet in New Haven it would seem to be a road game for the Jets. And if the Jets are on the road and away from home, why isn't NBC under NFL policy forced to tele W7 NBC-TV Pass Off The Jets-Giants Game? The Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots, considered a much more attractive game, will be televised instead. Although the Giants and Jets are down, their next meeting takes on a new kind of rivalry. Quarterback Joe Namath of the Jets is still trying to hang in there, and Craig Morton, the new quarterback for the Giants, is determined to move both himself and his team forward.

How About the Fans? Even if Yale Bowl is not a sellout on Nov. 10, owners of the Giants and Jets still have a right, under mutual agreement, to offer the game to TV. And if NBC should decline the offer, how much abuse would it receive from fans? The most fascinating question of all pertains to NFL policy on TV coverage. The NFL is divided into two conferences, American and National, with NBC covering the former and HAVE DINNER WITH AND ftp 0'nt IN OUR FREE CINEMA DINING LOUNGE NEVER HAVING TO SAY YOU'RE SORRY General Motors Building 5TH AVENUE at 59TH ST PHONE 832-3232 CBS the latter on Sunday after uii ouuuaj ti-i. the New York Metropolitan area.

However, there 13 a question as to whether the next meeting- on Nov. 10 will be on TV here. The question will not be answered tintil sometime next week, but in the interim lots more fascinating questions come to mind. The fascinating- questions relate to the TV policy of the National Football League, whether NBC really wants to televise the Giants-Jets games on Nov. 10, and whether fans of the Giants and Jets will send up a big- out-crv that the game must be on TV.

In an effort to put it all in perspective, let's go back to 1970 when the Giants and Jets played at Shea Stadium. The policy of the NFL then was that a home game had to be blacked out on TV in the home area. But many thousands of rabid fans, eager and willing to buy tickets to Shea Stadium, were told no more tickets were available. The resulting clamor caused the Jets and Giants to waive the rule that a home game could not be televised in the home area. Modify Blackout Rule Bat the old blackout rale has now been modified.

Last year Congress, which felt compelled to get into the blackout issue, approved a bill that says that any NFL game that is sold out 72 hours before game time must ba available for local TV coverage in the same city. Yesterday there were 15,000 1 unsold tickets for the Giants-Jets game. On the surface and under existing law, it seems quite elementary. No sell-out at the stadium, no local TV. But here is where all the fascinating questions begin to emerge.

Will the 15,000 unsold tickets suddenly be bought next week? Some think yes, others think no. Both the Giants and Jets have been dreadfully unimpressive so far this season and fan interest has dropped accordingly. However, the season record to date of each team is identical, 1-6-0, so they could meet on pretty even terms in Yale Bowl. And even if the teams come in with lousy records, will the rivalry that dominates the fans promote a demand that the game be televised? Tomorrow's Choice If the Giants-Jets game does become available for TV, then NBC will have to make a decision on whether to carry. It must be remembered that under the new federal law, no network is forced to televise a local game.

The law merely says that the NFL cannot impose a local blackout when the game is sold out. In arranging its Sunday afternoon schedule of NFL games, it would seem that NBC is not impressed with the Jets this season.
