i All the defendants were accused of "willfully assaulting and intimidating demonstrators on the Kent State University campus May 4, 1970, by firing in their direction and violating their constitutional rights not to be deprived of liberty without due process of law." Allison Krause, 19, of Pittsburgh; William Schroeder, 19, Lorain, Ohio; Sandra Scheuer, 20, Youngstown, Ohio, and Jeffrey Miller, 20, Plainview, N.Y., were killed.

The maximum penalty if convicted on the basic charge is one year and a $1,000 fine and, in Kavenna, Ohio; James D. AlcGee, 27, also of Ravenna; William E. Ferkins, 28, Canton. Ohio; Jamea E. Pierce, 29, Amelia Island.
