H8 The Ottawa Citizen, Thursday, January 23 1992 CITY LIGHTS GEMINI NOMINATIONS Road to Avonlea, E.N.G. leading contenders for Canadian TV awards -j The Gemini nominees announced Wednesday also contained other quirks, such as Street Legal the second most-watched Canadian series in calendar 1991 behind Avonlea being shut out of the best dramatic series category. Another puzzler comes with CTVs Counterstrike. a formula action show that drew two nominations for dramatic acting Rooney Burroughs Peterson Botsford Role in Stallion Avonlea star In Street Legal OfE.N.G. Both awards are co-ordinated by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television, which felt Canadian films would enjoy better marketing possibilities if the Genies came on the heels of the country's major autumn film festivals.

Likewise, the Academy decided that Canadian TV would benefit from a Gemini ceremony and the related publicity buildup during the peak viewing months of wintertime. Perhaps, but the 1992 show may seem outdated to viewers at home. The eligibility period for the event runs from July 1, 1990 to Oct 31, 1991 meaning such recent hits as CBC's Conspiracy of Silence and CTV's To Catch a Killer will not be eligible until next year. A few big shows from the current season did slip in under the wire notably the Curtis film. But the list of prominent nominees also includes, for instance, the long-gone CBC movie Getting Married in Buffalo Jump.

Broadcast in November 1990, Buffalo Jump was nominated for best TV movie along with the two other CBC movies Princes in Exile and The Rookies and the Curtis project. BY BILL ANDERSON The Canadian Press TORONTO In an echo of last time around, CBC's Road to Avonlea and CTV's E.N.G. are the leading contenders for the 1992 Gemini Awards for excellence in Canadian English-language TV. The two series, among more than 300 nominations announced Wednesday, were tied atop the Gemini leader board with eight nominations. At the last Gemini ceremony, held in December 1990, the two shows had 10 nominations apiece.

Other programs scoring high in the nominations Wednesday included CBC's drama-comedy series Mom P.I., and the CBC drama Street Legal, both with seven nominations. A CBC true-crime movie Journey Into Darkness: The Bruce Curtis Story grabbed six nominations. Several programs claimed five nominations each: the CBC mini-series Hie First Circle, the CTV mini-series Young Catlier-tne, the CBC movie Princes in Exile and the YTV comedy series Maniac Mansion. The nominees for best dramatic series tor stars Christopher Plummer and Simbn MacCorkindale. Hollywood veteran Mickey Rooney was also nominated in the same category, for the YTV series The Adventures of the Black Stallion, along with Street Legal's Eric Peterson and C.

David Johnsoa For best actress in a continuing dramatic role, the nominees were Amanda Stepto of Degrassi, Jackie Burroughs of Avonlea, Sara Botsford of E.N.G., Cynthia Dal' of Street Legal, and Jennifer Dale of No Place Like Home, seen Montreal. Conspicuous by their absence were two teen dramas CBC's Northtvood and CTV's Neon Rider. Another program missing in action was CBC's Material World, which was not entered in competition. included Road to Avonlea, E.N.G. and Mom P.I.

as well as CBC's Urban Angel and CBC's Degrassi High, which ended its run last year. The two nominees for best dramatic mini-series both period dramas of Russian history were CTV's Young CatJier-ine and CBC's The First Circle. The three nominees for best comedy series were all of the hip 'n' zany kind CBC's Codco, CBC's Kids in the Hall and Maniac Mansion, The 1992 Geminis will be held in March in Toronto with private ceremonies March 6 and 7 and then a gala finale on March 8 televised on CBC. French-language awards will be given out in December in Montreal. Overall, there are 55 gold Geminis and six special awards to be doled out from among a record-high 2,075 entries.

This year's Geminis will be the sixth such event, but the ceremony appears to be caught in a bit of a time warp after its annual presentation date was traded with that of the Genies for Canadian film.
