yH3 ATET CED FCJ dent, and his efforts to build a Marxist -revolution within a democratic system, In assessing the successes and failures of President Allende's j4BC's Report oil CMe Good Documentary Style By KAY GARDELLA The television documentary takes many forms. There is the personalized einema verite style that casts the camera as an observing bystander on the scene and cap Long John Nebel Elmer Lower tures intimate details of a story with a minimum of reportorial intrusion. It can be either very effective, depending on the skill of the producer and photographer, or simply a money-saving device to report a story. Another frequently seen type setts and California. Another example that readily comes to mind is a CBS documentary a couple of months ago on the open classroom concept.

Carefully Researched Then there are some carefully CO t2 Allende granted ABC newsmen and Elmer Lower, president of ABC News, an interview. In it he stressed the differences between his political way and that-of Fidel Castro in Cuba, which was Lower's big concern. Most important is the fact that to institute reforms he has "followed the legal channels." The People Carefully studied, too, on this fine hour were the people, who are unusually good looking and who have a long-standing tradition of democracy. The country also has a large and stable middle class. All are being led swiftly down the road to socialism all within the democratic framework.

"From, the- outside looking in, the fate of the Allende government is of more than passing interest to those opposed to Marxism. ABC News did a fine Job of contemporary perspective. And Murphy, who talks much slower than the usual foreign correspondent when on camera, is a refreshing change. He did his homework and he presented his material professionally. Make John Stay: Readers of this column are still making pleas to save the Dick Cavett Show.

While they're at it we wish they'd add WNBC's Long John Nebel to the list. We find it hard to believe that our favorite dial spieler has decided to leave the radio station Aug. 13. Can't someone over at WNBC convince him to stay 1 program, Chilean correspondent Charles Murphy made it abundantly clear that this is the first time in history where a revolution is taking place within the framework of the system. Allende polled only 36 of the vote in 8 three-way race, so his task consists of gaining majority support.

Murphy, who isn't seen too often on television, did a very professional job of explaining all aspects of his story, without assuming too much. Shown were young Communist painters who travel in packs and paint the walls of the country that has a population of 10 million, mostly European in origin. Youth groups of the political factions paint vigorously over one another's work. Trouble at Mines Allende is a handsome man who from all outward appearances is going about the job of being President in a very orderly fashion. Still, since he has taken office, Cuba's Fidel Castro has been welcomed again in the country and, as Murphy showed, of documentary is an advocate report on a subject.

In this case the network makes no attempt to show two sides, or to try and balance its findings. It's made apparent from the start that the topic or development is being viewed from a particular point of view by the network and reporter a revolution Is taking place without rifles-. Among some of his sweeping reforms focused on during the hour is the government takeover of farms, mines and industry. The Chucecamata Mine in the Atacama Desert, for instance, was run by the Anaconda Copper Corp. before Allende moved in.

But, as the program pointed out, the desert conditions are so hostile to living that men must receive very high pay to work the mines. Even the government couldn't convince them that "copper is Chile's salary." Workers' salaries have gone up, but Chile's salary, copper production, has not risen accordingly. Even the American-built trucks are wearing out, and Chile is hard-pressed to find substitutes. Since the Allende takeovers, United States investment in Chile has slid from $800 million to $50 million. This is why Chile and its government bear wutching it's1 the first Marxist beachhead on the mainland of America.

and the hour or half hour is a researched hours that bring every view into play and give the viewer as complete a picture as is possible about the subject. Certainly CBS' recently viewed "The Mexican Connection" is one example, and last night's ABC hour. "Chile: Experiment in Red," is another. Painstakingly, the ABC report, hosted and narrated by ABC News correspondents Charles Murphy and John Sherman, examined the reign- of Salvador Allende, the first freely elected Marxist presi means of sharing the findings with you. High on this type of journalism is ABC, and a case in point is the recently seen hour with Frank Reynolds on reform of juvenile institutions in Massachu TODAY'S PROGRAMS ttighlights 8, 9 Baseball; Padres-Mets (Double- 1:00 p.m.- header).
