The ornate mansion, home of Winston Churchill's mother (and birthplace of the Manhattan cocktail), was almost saved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in January when the present owners offered it for sale for The commission failed to ante up the cash and was forced to give permission to raze the mansion to make room for an office bunding.
