THE SANDUSKY REGISTER-4TAR-HEW8 July I. itsi £peakihj Of FOLKS AND FACTS HAiiV STAfcK ORIGIN OF Cua.OiU jTIVlE peals of happy wedding bells arc not limited to oniy so -called traditional Month of Brides. The bells peal Just as invitingly in spring, fall and winter as they do in summer. True it is that since early Roman days, when June was named after the mythological goddess Juno, deity of all things pertaining to marriage and finances, June weddings have always been in the majority. It is said that in those olden days, even those following the Roman era, many weddings which might otherwise have been held in earlier months, were postponed to Of course, the Christian Lenten season often played a part in wedding deferments.

Yet while such weddings could have been set for May, it was seldom done, because certain superstitious beliefs pertaining to May made it an "unlucky month." Many wedding customs still in vogue owe their origins to ancient cays. Among them might be mentioned the throwing of rice or of old shoes for "good luck," or the wearing of orange blossoms by the bride; of the minister kissing the bride; of the groom carrying the bride across the threshold; of wearing wedding rings; of cutting the wedding cake for the guests, and various others. One may wonder how all these customs originated, and what degrees of significance were attached to them. There's, for instance, the almost universal rice-throwing: custom. We may go back to old Rome for that.

While it was not rice they used, but the meaning was the same. Grains of wheat symbolized fertility and growth, and so, when a Roman bride came to her nuptials she was given three heads of wheat to carry. They represented the blessings of the goddess Juno for a successful marriage. Her friends, waiting for her at the would throw small quan- 1 1 ties of wheat grains at her for ood luck. They then would make a rush to pick up, for their own 'ood hick, such grains as had touched her person and fallen to the ground.

In the days of the first Queen Bess of England, now almost 400 years ago, the wheat grain custom was a bit changed. Instead of loose grains, guests were given small baked cakes of wheat to throw at the bride at a given moment. Those of the unmarried guests who were able either to snatch one of the little cakes from her, or to pick up any she may have dropped, were considered lucky as to their own wedding plans. Later rice took place of wheat, probably because it was cleaner and more easily obtained. And thus, instead of casting the small wheat cakes, guests tossed hand- fulls of rice at the bride.

It is not clear why grains of oats or kernels of corn were never used. The next step from baking a lot of little cakes for throwing, was the baking of a large wedding cake for eating. Thus instead of tossing away the edible pieces of cake guests received at a wedding, they took the pieces home, placed them under their pillows and hoped for lucky or significant dreams when they slept on them. The custom pertaining to discarded shoes has Its origin among early Israelites, although applied In a different form. By removing their shoes in the presence of a debtor they indicated relinquishment of the claim they might have held against him.

Today the discarded shoes at a wedding may be said to signify that the famlliefl of the bridal pair have relinquished their claim to the bride and groom, leaving them free to lead their own lives. Also, such old shoes serve as a token that each of the bridal counle is expected to relinquish his or her former mode of life and start a new one together. And why the orange blossoms? Well, the orange tree is a bit unusual in that it bears both blossoms and fruits at the same time, thus symbolizing special fertility and co-operative success. Besides, the sweetness of the blossoms' ragrance, permeating the air for miles around, represents the sweetness of the brido's personality which casts its dainty influftice over the groom and over all others in her circle. (To Be Concluded) THEATER NEWS OHIO "Strategic Air Command." starring James Stewart and June Allyson will continue its run through next Thursday.
