THE DEMOCRAT, Wednesday, May 13, ,.,,4 AA-OC, Unity qualify trackmen for state Maurice-Orange City took second place in the District track meet behind winning Sioux Center, and qualified for the state meet in eight events. Unity took ninth in the 17 school lineup, at the meet held in Sioux Center Monday night, after rain forced postponement from Friday. M-OC first places were earned, by Doug De Haan with 47.2 in the shot put, Jed De Jong, who cleared 6' in high jump, Gary Brummels, who finished the 220 yd. dash in 22.5 seconds, and by the 440 and 880 relay teams. dash along with the 2-mile relay and medley relay teams, which took a second and a third place, respectively. Unity freshman Denny Rowenhorst took a third in high jump, clearing his best jump this year, and just high enough to qualify for stale. Brian Obbink again broke the school record in the 880 yd. run, where he took a third place, but his time of 2:06.2 was two tenths of a second too slow to quality for state. Unity took fourth in the mile relay and fifth in the 880 and the 2 mile relay.

Akron withdraws from Siouxland conference It was officially announced and accepted by the board of control of the Siouxland Conference, at its regular meeting on May 7, that the Akron community schools will be withdrawing from the Siouxland Conference. This move will take place at the close of the summer baseball season in 1975. Akron school officials announced that they plan to join the Little Sioux Conference at that time. The Red Raiders have been a part of the Siouxland Conference since its beginning in 1952, a period of 22 years. They were instrumental in organizing the league at that time.

This leaves the conference with eight members and league officials expressed the opinion that they intend to stay with this number for some time to come. Member schools remaining include Boyden-Hull, Central Lyon of Rock Rapids, George, Maurice-Orange City, Rock Valley, Sioux Center, West Lyon of Inwood, and West Sioux of Hawarden. Little Warrior meet today The 5th Annual "Little Warrior" Jr. High Track Meet will be held on Wednesday, May 15, at the Sioux Center Athletic Field. Participating teams will include 7th-8th-9th grade athletes from Boyden-Hull, Central Lyon, Maurice- Orange City, Rock Valley, Sheldon, and Sioux Center.

The meet will get underway at 4:30 p.m. Central Lyon is the defending champion in the 7th grade division, Central Lyon and Sioux Center are co-defenders at the 8th grade level, and Sioux Center was last years titlcholder in the 9th grade class. Northwestern's Krull with Green Bay Packers Threatened by the possibility of holdouts and World Football League player raids into the ranks of the NFL, the Green Bay Packers are looking for new blood. Curt Krull, 180 Ib. quarterback on the Northwestern college Red Raider team, has reached agreement with Bill Tobin of Green Bay's front office.

Krull is to report to the Packer training camp on July 14. This is the second Northwestern football player to sign a pro-contract. Kelvin Korver, nephew of Red Raider Coach Larry Korver, is now playing with the Oakland Raiders. Krull, senior from Doon, Iowa, attended Central Lyon High in Rock Rapids. At Northwestern, Krull was the starting quarterback for four years.

Earl Woudstra and Jeff Visser, both medalists, led the team both shooting a 41. Bob Dorhout also earned a medal for being one of the lowest ten. LeMars Gehlen won the meet, led by Dave Erdman who shot a 37 with a team total of 160, followed by Unity with 167.

Third place went to Floyd Valley with a 174, Sanborn took fourth with 178, and Western was fifth with a 181. Oth'er schools involved in the meet were Granville Spalding, Remsen St. Mary's, Storm Lake St. Mary's and Fonda. Track and field meet in Sioux Center May 20 The 20th Annual Siouxland Conference Boys' Track and Field Meet will be held on Monday, May 20, at the all-weather track in Sioux Center.

This always outstanding meet will get underway at 5:45 p.m. with field events and preliminaries and the main evening attraction will start with the queen coronation at 7:00 p.m., with all final running events scheduled to get underway at 7:15 p.m. Many outstanding individuals and teams will be on hand to take part in the competition. Last years conference champion, Sioux Center, will be on hand to defend its championship and would be considered the favorite at this.time. However, a real challenge will be expected from Maurice-Orange City, last years State Class champions, as well as from West Lyon, Central Lyon, Boyden-Hull, and Rock Valley.

Other teams expected to RV, SC lead in Siouxland golf The Siouxland Conference golf races are well underway. The girls from Sioux Center have a substantial lead in the girls race, but the boys race is deadlocked between Rock Valley and West Sioux, with Maurice-Orange City and West Lyon right on their heels. Dual meet competition will continue throughout the next two weeks and the annual two day conference golf meet will wind up the conference season on Wednesday and Thursday, May 22 and 23. The meet will be held at hosted by West Sioux, and at Canton, South by West Lyon. The meet will be held this week Friday with field events getting underway at 4:00 p.m. and the running events to follow. Unity Christian is the defending champ but the Knights are going to have to come through with exceptional performances if they are to repeat this year. This year's meet should prove to be one of the most balanced in terms of competition with LeMars Gehlen perhaps wearing the role of favorite. But strong challenges should also come from Sanborn, Floyd Valley, Storm Lake St.

Mary's, and Little Rock. None of the records in the field events appear to be in danger but it is suspected that a real assault will be made on the record book in the running events, both individual and relay. Little Rock's Fred Trei could eclipse the :10.5 record (set by Unity's Jerry in 1970) in the 100 yard dash as well as the :23.5 clocking in the 220. (The latter was also set by in 1970). Floyd Valley's Loren Van Gelder could erase the :53.5 record in the 440 while teammate Paul Van Roekel is sure to challenge the 2 Mile Run record.

Unity's Brian Obbink has his eye on the 2:07.6 record in the 880 Yd. Run and he has bettered that already this year. And there are several relay marks that should fall as Gehlen, Unity, Sanborn and Floyd Valley have each surpassed one of the existing marks in previous competition this Spring.
