Cycling groups want OC Transpo to review the training it gives drivers about bicyclists after it failed to explain an incident involving a bicyclist Brett Delmage of Holland Avenue said at one point a driver threatened to run him down when he tried to halt the bus by standing in front of it. Delmage said he was bicycling on Meadowlands Drive in Nepean April 8 when an articulated bus approaching from behind honked at him and then cut him off twice as it pulled up at bus stops. Delmage, who is an executive member of Citizens for Safe Cycling and teaches defensive riding courses for the Ottawa-Carleton Safety Council and Canadian Cycling Association, says he knocked on the bus entry door to seek an explanation from the driver. When the driver did not open the door, Delmage says he stood in front of the stopped bus and leaned his bicycle against it while he wrote down the bus serial number.

The driver began moving forward and the bike fell under the bus. But Delmage held his ground until, he said: "I was forced to jump out of the way when (the driver) continued driving the bus." Delmage said the bicycle suffered a bent frame and broken pedals costing $162. A Nepean police report says the unidentified driver did not see the bicycle in front of the bus when he pulled ahead. It does not refer to Delmage's allegation that he was cut off. It does not lay blame.

Delmage wrote to OC Transpo general manager John Bonsall to complain about both parts of the incident. He asked for "written confirmation that the actions of your bus driver are totally unacceptable" and that Transpo drivers "are trained to respect bicycles as vehicles and that they are instructed how to safely share the road with them." He has not yet received a written response, nor has Ewen Todd, president of Citizens for Safe Cycling, who wrote to express his group's concern. Delmage said Transpo staff have told him by telephone that it was not to blame for the damage to the bike and will not pay any claim. But he is unhappy that top management has not responded to his safety concerns. Delmage admits he was "furious" when the bus rode over his bike.

Now, he said Wednesday, the issue is broader. "I'm not out to get OC Transpo. I'm concerned about the safety of other cyclists." Oxana Sawka, spokesman for OC Transpo, said Bonsall would reply soon. She said a Transpo investigation concluded that DODGE 100 Custom, 1984. 6 cylinder automatic.

THE BIG WORDS ARE NO RESERVES John Major, Citizen Delmage cycles down busy Ottawa street the driver, with seven years experience and a good record, "responded in a defensive and reasonable manoeuvre to the situation." She said she could not say whether Transpo rebuts any or all of Delmage's description of the episode. Bonsall is out of town and she said she did not have those details. She said drivers are expected to stop the bus and radio for assistance if anyone stands in front of it. Christine Jenkins, bicycle education and safety coordinator at the Safety Council, said there is "definite room for improvement" in the treatment by all large vehicles, including buses, of bicycles, motorcycles and the like.

where a bicyclist and a bus making repeated stops repeatedly overtake each other, is a problem. Another problem, said Jenkins, is the "huge" blind spot surrounding buses, Jenkins said. "Always see the driver in his (side) mirror," Jenkins advises.
