SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED FOR THIS CENTURY The Two Weeks Holiday Vacation is on and Pupils Laid Aside Their Books Until January 2, 1901 Standing of the Scholars in the High Schools. Yesterday marked the closing sessions in the public schools for this year and also for the nineteenth century. Jinny of the teachers referred to the progress of education during the century about to close, and in many of the schools there were exercises appropriate to the Christmas tide. Nearly all the rooms were decorated for the occasion.

The pupils of Madame lluenzeler's primary school and kindergarten, 418 Walnut street, gave a Christmas entertainment in the school room yesterday, which was attended by a large number of parents and friends of the little ones, inn ing the term the children made many little gifts for their parents and these were distributed at the close of the exercises. The pupils of the Misses Stewart private school, 238 North Fifth street, gave a Christmas entertainment, which was attended by a number of the former pupils and friends of the present attendants of the school. A Christmas tree was the centre of attraction and held the attention of the little ones. It had been trimmed by the Misses Stew ait and bore a gift of remembrance for everv pupil. A pleasing program was observed.

This included Christmas carols and recitations. The latter were given by the following: Misses Margaret Nichols, Margaret Kick, Madeline Kenner. Theo. Heizmann, Kuth, Medlar, Ada and Cra Sunday, Annie Cooper, Joseph Eisenhower, Herbert Frank hauser, Augusta Muhlenberg, Margaret Hrockerhoff, Henry Brockerhoff, Paul Case, Julia Itlck, Esther and Samuel teahouse. Margaret O'Donnel, Ada leinbach, Bessie Klees and Laura Ueiff.

ACADEMY OF MUSIC. The Itrotliers Byrne will this after noon and evening show their audiences how to "laugh and grow fat." The spirit of mirth prevails to such a large extent in these performances that there Is a constant peal of laughter from the audience. Pantomime, gymnastics and humor, coupled with novel scenic ef fects and wonderful mechanical tricks, and inspired by the Brothers Byrne and a talented company, give an evening of rare pleasure to all who witness the production. Two big houses will wit ness "8 Bells," the name given to this jolly entertainment, always popular. GRAND OPERA HOUSE.

'The Ideals" will open an engage ment at the Grand Opera House on Christmas, presenting "The Lost Para dise" at the matinee and "In the Heart of the Storm" in the evening. Miss Beatrice Earle. a favorite here, will assume the leading roles, and good specialties will be introduced. Change of program at each performance. FURNITURE FACTORY FIRE.

The Loss Over One Million Dollars Cause Unknown. Specl il to The Timet.) Hanover, Dec. 21. The Knech tel Furniture company's factory, the largest in the Dominion of Canada, was burned last night. Early in the evening the lire was discovered and about an hour later the factory was destroyed.

About ten million feet of lumber In the yard, and the sawmill were saved. The cause of the fire is unknown. The following were consumed: The Grcutzener Furniture and Undertaking establishment: the Poehlman company, flour and feed: B. F. Ahrens, hardware; Graff and Weppler, general drygoods: W.

Roloff, photographer; H. Maurer, carriage works and Charles Doepl. Hour and feed. The total financial loss is over $1,000,000. Mr.

The contest will be held on the first Monday in February. The combining of two contests sim plifies matters and will settle at once when adjudication is had of both, the will of September 26, 1S16. alleged to be genuine and that of June 30, last, the Patrick will, alleged to be a forgery.
