THE OTTAWA CITIZEN MONDAY, MARCH 27, 1989 A15 Television OJ STARGAZING a. dx Kino son stow piamis The New York Times v. appearances, said he hadn't the vaguest idea what this series was about. In addition to the usual mix of comedies about single parents and dramas about cops and lawyer, the network is developing a mini-series based on And the Band Played On, Randy Shilts's book about the history of AIDS in America, and a half-hour comedy by Mel Brooks about a crazy New York hotel, starring the comedian's stock company of actors including Harvey Korman and Cloris Leachman. Among the candidates for dramatic series are Hanna, about a police detective in the big-drugs-and-big-business world of Los Angeles in the 1990s, created by Michael Mann, the creator of Miami Vice; Baywatch, starring David Hasselhoff and Parker Stevenson as lifeguards, and Shannon's Deal, written by the independent filmmaker John Sayles.

Shannon's Deal is about a burned-out corporate lawyer who starts over on his own in Philadelphia. Other planned movies and mini-series include a version of Ernest Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea starring Anthony Quinn; Tennessee Williams's Sweet Bird of Youth starring Elizabeth Taylor as a fading movie star, and Running Mates starring Doris Day as a local citizen running for mayor against a movie star. There are also several movies and mini-series based on real-life stories, including a story about the killing of a young black man in Howard Beach, Queens, in December 1986; a story on the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s, one about the three civil-rights workers slain in the South in 1964 whose story was fictionalized in Mississippi Burning, and Blind Faith, from Joe McGinnis's book about a leading citizen in a small New Jersey community who is victed of murdering his wife. The Rock Hudson Story is among the movies and mini-series being planned by NBC for the 1989-90 television season. Hound Town, an animated series by Ralph Bakshi that will capitalize on the success of the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit last summer is also in development.

Among other comedies from which the network will choose are: Morton's by the Bay starring Nell Carter as the manager of a New York catering service. FM, starring Robert Hays as the program director of a listener-supported public-radio station. Knight and Daye, a series reminiscent of The Sunshine Boys to star Jack Warden and Mason Adams as two old men who were a successful comedy team 35 years ago. Wally and the Diamonds, re- Rock Hudson Among movies, miniseries calling The Monkees in which the network will create a musical group to perform on the series. Young Rodney.

Rodney Dan-gerfield, who would make cameo "HlHlAii-lH. lack, white families share action in new soap New on Bandstand David Hirsch, 26, has been named to take over from Dick Clark who steps down as host of American Bandstand on April 8. The syndicated show is also switching to the USA Network on that date. "The syndicated market for game By Joan Hanauer United Press International Citizen news services viewpoint of our characters, that's important." NBC also has other reasons for using a black core family. Frons said the audience for daytime drama is about 70 per cent women over 18, 20 per cent men, and the rest are kids and teens.

He said blacks "are disproportionately high viewers relative to their percentage of population." The Marshalls will not be discriminated against financially just like the white families on soaps they will enjoy a distinctly upscale lifestyle, complete with chic wardrobes, luxuriously decorated homes and sparkling crystal. He said NBC decided to start with a half hour although hour-long soap operas are now standard on television because the shorter format makes the daytime drama easier to launch. "We were the first network to start from scratch with an hour-long soap opera, Santa Barbara, and we found we had underestimated the physical problems," he said. clude none of the eccentric twists the genre has taken lately science fiction, fantasy, action-adventure. "We will concentrate on the family structure, telling basically relationship-oriented romantic stories.

Action-adventure is fine for some other shows, but it's not what we're doing." Both Frons and Sussman agreed that it was time for blacks to be a core family in a soap opera. "There are black characters on every soap opera and there have been some very good black story lines," Sussman said. "The time has come to go one step further. They have the same concerns and problems as any other families." The black story lines obviously will give Sussman a chance to deliver messages without having to reach for them or to seem preachy. "I think that's very important to us we have the situation and dynamics to give a lot of positive messages," she said.

"We're not trying to create fairy tale situations, but if we can give the audience something positive, from the shows has reached saturation levels. The viewer can find game shows all over the place on virtually every independent, affiliate, cable or network station. "The only place you can see a soap opera is on the networks." Generations is the story of the Whitmores, who are white, and the Marshalls, who are black. Among its stars are some refugees from prime time Taurean Blacque, formerly of Hill Street Blues, Pat Crowley (Dynasty), Lynn Hamilton (Sanford and Son) and Joan Pringle (The White Shadow). The link between the Marshall and Whitmore families goes back three generations, to the time when Ruth Marshall's mother worked as a housekeeper and nanny in the Whitmore home.

The Marshalls have come a long way and now own a successful chain of ice cream stores, and the families have remained close. "This show is closer to traditional soap opera than some," Sussman said, adding it would in Raising kids Some NBC-owned TV stations have contracted to air a series of four documentary specials, Raising Good Kids in Bad Times, dealing with childhood development issues. The shows will be aired quarterly, beginning April 23, and will be hosted by Tom Selleck, Whoopi Goldberg, Michael Landon and Loni Anderson. More history The Americas Experience, the historical documentary series that ran on PBS last winter, has received funding for two additional seasons from Aetna Life and Casualty. The first of the new batch of programs will begin airing in October, with subjects that will include baseball, the space race, immigrants, Prohibition and 19th-century feminist Ida B.

Wells. NEW YORK Generations, the new NBC soap opera, comes in black and white as well as living color it is the intertwined stories of a black family and a white family in Chicago. The half-hour show begins to unfold today and Channel 8 Rochester will run it daily at 12:30 p.m., pitting it against the most popular soap on television, CBS's The Young The Restless. That means that Sally Sussman, Generations' creator, executive producer and head writer, will be competing with the soap she wrote for five years The Ottawans can also see the show on CBC's channels 4 and 6 each weekday at 4 p.m. To make room for Generations, NBC has cancelled two game shows, Super Password and Sale of the Century, and will return one of those half hours to local programming.

"The reasons are financial," said Brian Frons, NBC's vice president, daytime programs. Alda to star Five-time Emmy winner Alan Alda will star in an hour-long NBC drama for next season. No title. Oscar nominee Martin Breg-man (Serpico) will be exec producer; Vince Patrick (The Pope of Greenwich Village), writer. It's Alda's first series project for NBC and his first series, period, since M-A-S-H folded its tents in '83.
