THE OTTAWA CITIZEN SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 1989 l5 Religion alvatf obi Amy tto provide Today is excellent time to pray that we've seen an end to war 1 ,200 hristtmas hampers By Bob Harvey Citizen staff writer year, the Salvation Army to provide Christmas hampers to 1,200 needy families Ottawa alone. And that work is just a small part of the year-round that the -Salvation Army provides to homeless men and women, to al- Pratt U.UIIWCU mum- ers, and to Sets priority "many others through its 11 hospitals, its hostels, and other social services operated out of 150 centres across Canada. All this plus 400 churches is supervised by just 1,500 officers, says Will Pratt, Territorial $5 tablished that on our side we were pure and good and innocent. The English poet, C. Day Lewis, expressed the mood of many of us when he wrote these lines during the war: We who have lived by honest dreams Defend the bad against the worst.

When the war was over we were given certain benefits by a grateful government: my grants paid for my education for the ministry. We were also given rather ugly lapel buttons which few of us wear nowadays, and sets of pretty medals hanging from pretty ribbons. We remember our friends who were killed in battle, men with whom we had developed those special friendships which shared ordeal and danger engender. Many of the best men of our generation, and a few of the best women, too, did not live to become veterans as we are veterans. We remember them and in our remembering we pray that Canada will never have another generation of war veterans.

(Or. Davidson, a retired minister of the United Church ot Canada, lives in Victoria.) Anglicans 'must reach out to ble income. And when he later began preaching on street corners, he tried leading dirty, smelly street people into established churches only to find they were forced to sit up behind the organ loft. Pratt says the growth of the Salvation Army churches themselves is not keeping pace with the increase in population and admits that many Christian churches are expected to disappear by the year 2000 But he says it's not because the world is losing interest in Jesus Christ. The flood of films and plays like Godspell, The Last Temptation of Jesus Christ, and Jesus of Montreal, show the world is fascinated by Jesus.

"The problem with the church and I include us is that we are so busy with hair-splitting over doctrine that we're not doing what we should be doing, which is lifting up the name of Jesus." minorities' ing and at the same time excited." Pratt says the first priority of Salvation Army officers and other Christians should be to tell others about Jesus Christ, but says "that doesn't mean a needy person is helped to proselytize him. If a man needs a job or clothes, he must be given help because he needs it." Pratt says the Salvation Army began in service to the needy because its founder, General William Booth, saw poverty firsthand. After Booth's father went bankrupt, his mother had to support the family by selling her handicrafts door to door.

Booth himself was apprenticed to a pawnbroker at the age of 14 to provide the family with a sta Paul's Cathedral in London, in which O'Driscoll won on the fourth ballot, beating out five declared candidates and six others nominated at the last minute. "For years, we have been associated with the Church (of England)," said O'Driscoll. "In fact in Quebec, people still call us the English church. But people aren't aware that we have Japanese congregations in Toronto. One of the big issues facing the church is how we manage that change." O'Driscoll is married and has two grown children.

A PLACE TO BECOME In many places in Canada today these lines from Laurence Binyon's poem about the fallen of the First World War will be spoken in the Remembrance services: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. We who survived our country's war are now wearied by age and condemned by the years. Most of us who came out of the Second World War are in our sixties and seventies; the youngest of those who served in Korea are close behind us. The youngest veterans of the First World War still with us are now are in their late eighties.

The average age at the time of their deaths of the men of all nations buried in the so-called war graves was 21. Most of us who served in, and survived, the Second World War were in our late teens and early 20s when we enlisted. We matured during the war. With many of us it was a precarious and confused maturing. fiBf REV. J.A. DAVIDSON Citizen correspondent into maturity than we would have ordinarily. In other ways we were denied some of the ordinary opportunities and circumstances in which maturing takes place. We were ordinary young men there were ordinary young women, too, among us caught up in a great horror that was not of our making.

We were not inclined to see ourselves as crusading knights in shining armor. I cannot remember any of my fellow soldiers embracing the mystique of out-and-out militarism, seeing war as good in itself. We did the warrior's job on sea and land and in the air but few of us were warriors to the marrow. We knew that Nazism was a great evil, but we were not complacent about the righteousness of our cause and we did not assume that Nazi evil somehow es Rsv. D.J.
