(Live) (3:30) guing documentary about an amazing man, and powerful drama. Mind you, it still suffers from some the same problems SUNDAY PRIME TIME AT A GLANCE that irritated critics in its film lorm. I he story is disjointed, told through much of its length in non-sequential flashbacks. They are fractured memories conjured from ex-wives, lovers, friends and colleagues by a socialist journalist (Colm Feore) intent on discovering the essence of the man after his death. Writer Ted Allan, whose script star Donald Sutherland openly excoriated when the film was on the festival circuit, was fictionalizing his own experience researching the Norman Bethune story for his 1942 biography The Scalpel and The Sword.

But he may also have been thinking of the structure of a cinema classic. Citizen Kane, another film about a great man with noble intentions and jumbo-sized ego, was more ably strung together, however. The disorienting effect is less apparent in the mini-series, if only because it is approximately twice as long as the feature film. And that's even taking into account that roughly an hour of the four-hour length is devoted to commercials. Film was recut to make it more chronological The film has been deliberately reeut to make the story more chronological, says CBC, and has been given an entirely new narrative track, written by Allan and recorded by Feore and Sutherland.

It's rather heavy-handed, but helps to keep the audience on track. The editing is a little jarring, particularly at commercial breaks, but overall the film has more elbow room. The good news is the miniseries has a full measure of the film's attractions as well as these paler versions of its blemishes. Chief among these charms is the performance of Sutherland as the ideological doctor. Sutherland is galvanizing whenever he takes on the character of a passionately-committed individual, but Bethune has been a career-long passion for the actor who also played him in a relatively low-budget 1977 CBC biography directed by Eric Till.

There's also strong, if spotty direction by Philip Borsos (The Grey Fox) and lots of spectacular footage of the Chinese interior. The story is comprehensive, from his days as a crusading Montreal surgeon who has little time for his wife Frances (Helen Mirren), though endowed with a sexual appetite to match his ego. It covers his battle with tuberculosis, from which he cured himself after doctors refused to attempt a risky new procedure, and his subsequent lobbying for a socialized medicine system, a passion that eventually inspired his interest in communism. The film includes a segment on his service in Spain as a bull-headed surgeon serving the socialist alliance fighting Franco's fascist forces. He is too belligerent for the cause, however, and is asked to leave Spain.

Back in Montreal, he finds a new cause to espouse, that of Mao Zedong's Eighth Army. In China he meets a protes-tant missionary (Helen Shaver) and is finally humbled by the actions of a less than perfect but truly dedicated Chinese doctor. Freed of his ego, he finally becomes the hero he wanted to be. Norman Bethune is still a much-honored figure in China. am mi; -m -s i TVOnlario24 22 Jeunes esprits Sefalreunnom Science amateurs Carte blanche "Une histoire de vent" (R) Cinema "Ma Comedie) Maurice Chevalier.
