Diana Brebner won $1,000 for lacing first in League of Canadi-tn Poets' third annual National 3oetry Contest. Blaine Marchand took the $750 second prize. Third, $500, went to J. Eastwood of St.

John's. Their poems and 47 other of the pest poems are to appear in the Hague's annual contest anthology, More Garden Varieties II, be published this fall by Aya Mercury Press. Others in the top 50 contestants Rafi Aaron of Ottawa and Michel Crummey, Eric Folsom and Lydia Kwa, all of Kingston. Brebner, 33, said her poem Snow Angels was the first she wrote Jan. 1 with a new feeling rjf freedom (her younger daughter, 5, had just started daycare).

Previously, she had resolved never to let her art compete with her children. She felt proud just to have her work read by judges Patrick Lane, Miriam Waddington and Joyce Marshall because they are such good writers themselves: "The fact that they chose it first is such a tremendous honor." Brebner was born in Kingston, the daughter of Dutch immigrants. Fifteen of her poems appeared in Distant Kin: Dutch-Canadian Stories and Poems (Netherlandic Press). British poets Ted Hughes and Seamus Heaney picked her long poem, The Sparrow Drawer (set in the Museum of Nature in Ottawa), for commendation in an international competition (Arvon) and her poems have appeared in numerous literary magazines. Brebner and husband Peter both work at home: he makes backpacks and tents for North Pole explorers, archeologists, and adventurers.

Ottawa-born Blaine Marchand, 40, said he was specially honored because there were so many entries and because the judges were such fine writers. The novel, aimed at readers age 14-17, tells about a 17-year-old Sudbury boy's visit to his father in Zimbabwe, where he befriends an African boy.
