CALL SPURNS HEARST'S OFFER REPUDIATES ACTION OF THE DOODLE DEES Declares Effect of Bolters' League Is to Stalk Votes from Bryan for the Benefit of Taft Joseph H. Call yesterday handed back to the Independence league, Hearst's local organization, the nomination for congress gratuitously presented by Democratic bolters.

Attorney Call Is well posted on citrus products and Indignantly spurned this lemon gratuitously offered. Mr. Call gave out a formal repudlatjon of the "honor" yesterday as follows: "I aYn surprised to learn that the Independence league has assumed to nominate me for congress for this district. "I am not a member of nor In any Way affiliated with that organization and under no circumstances will I accept the nomination. "While I feel that locally there arc those In the Independence league who Intend the act as a compliment to me personally, I am convinced that the effect of the Independence league organization is to stalk votes from Bryan Cor the benefit of Taft.

"In this campaign I feel that the whole people should be united against the party In power, which Is supported by all of the great predatory corporations. "Mr. Bryan and the Democratic party have my full support in this campaign." OLD HICKORY DEBATE AROUSES MUCH INTEREST Arrangements for the debate next Thursday evening before the Old Hickory club in Highland Park indicate that perhaps Woods hall will not be large enough to hold the crowd. Back in '96 Charles F. Johnson, who will argue the Democratic side, and R.

J. Dominguez, who will represent the Republican side, were both prominent as political debaters, and one night filled Elks' hall on Spring street to overflowing. Hundreds crowded the sidewalks, it being one of the campaign events then. Yesterday Eduardo A. Carson, secretary of the Latin-American Republican league, sent the following acceptance to Dr.

S. Yerkes Van Meter of Mr. Johnson's challenge: As secretary of the Latin-American Republican league of Southern California, I beg leave to acknowledge the receipt of jur communication directed to Frank Dominguez, president of the league, challenging him to a public debate, to take place on the 24th the Issue to be: "Resolved, That It Is to os 111 '8 Los Angeles City, No. 73 4 70 34 Angus Mclntyre. 1502V4 W.
