THE OTTAWA CITIZEN THURSDAY, MAY 18, 1989 D5 Living Rain turns opening of research centre into indoor scrum I MARGO YA ROSTON Sk iacA Citizen PARTYLINE tre, and his wife Joan at a reception in the Arts Centre. Guests including Alberta MP Steve Paproski, deputy chairman of committees of the whole house, and his wife Betty and Judge Jim Jerome and his wife Barry, Senator Joyce Fairbairn and her husband Mike Gillan, Alberta MP Willie Littlechild, CRTC Commissioner Adrian Burns and Senator James Balfour and his wife Jane, nibbled on hors d'oeuvres and pastries and caught up on western gossip. From the western delegation it was on to the eastern contingent at a party at the Rockcliffe home of Margot and Roberto Gualtieri, the deputy secretary, government research and universities sector, at the department of science and technology. Seen were NACO activist Trndi Lecaine, restaurateur Alfie Friedman and his wife Kysa, and Brace Corder, former general manager of the NAC. Also at the buffet dinner were NAC music producer Joanne Morrow, who just that day announced her departure for greener pastures at the Canada Council, the also departing music director Gabriel Chmura and his wife Mareile, and the NACO's assistant concertmaster Joan Milk-son, who brought along homemade baklava for dessert.

She also has a deft touch with chocolates. It rained on the gala opening of the new Research Centre at the Heart Institute last Thursday. The plan to hold the ribbon cutting ceremony and speeches outside were washed away in the deluge and the main guest Premier David Peterson and local provincial and. municipal politicians, staffers and. guests moved indoors to the foyer for what can only be described in Ottawa as a scrum.

But Peterson got off a few good lines. "Did you notice how accountability brings on humility," he quipped to smiling regional chairman Andy Haydon. "Did you notice now that he has to be elected how much kinder he is." And turning to the institute's director general Dr. Wilbert Keon he suggested that the first recipient of a new heart be Michael Wilson. The other speakers weren't quite as glib.

Included among the heavy battery of speakers and officials were Gordon Henderson, chairman of the institute's advisory board, Edward Lane, chairman of the Civic Hospital's board of trustees, Paul Dick, minister of supply and services, Zeev Vered, businessman and chairman of the Research Centre's fundraising campaign, who donated a large art work called the Tree of Life to the front entrance, Antoine D'lorio, rector of University of Ron Kocsis photo Mario Bernardi, left, with Judith Forst and Harvie Andre at reception after concert now happily across the street, artist Jerry Grey and potter Harlan House. Ottawa, Lawrence Bouchier, president of the Heart Institute Alumni, Peter Carruthers, president of the Civic Hospital, Dr. Gilles Hur-teau, dean of health sciences, of 0 and Dr. Adolfo de Bold, director of research, Heart Institute. Elinor Caplan, Ontario's minister of health, showed up in a green leather suit and Maureen McTeer in a red, wide-brimmed hat.

Following the official opening, guests went up to the second floor for drinks and nibbles, including no-cholesterol veggies with dip. And the rain didn't help the arts crowd Friday who arrived at the renovated Panet House on Laurier Avenue for the opening of the Chalmers Cultural Centre, the new home of the Canadian Crafts Council, the Canadian Artists Representation, the Canadian Music Council and the Canadian Conference of the Arts. Among the most interested in the crowd were lawyer Antoine de tent in the rain. Among the names were Flora MacDonald, former minister of communications and Jim Edwards, parliamentary secretary to Marcel Masse, minister of communications, Barry Padol-sky, the architect responsible for the renovations to the house, Diane Codere, president of the Canadian Crafts Council, Brian Segal, president of the Chalmers Cultural Centre Foundation. Also there was Richard Ger-vais, a neighbor responsible for getting 2,000 names on a petition when it seemed the historical mansion would be torn down to make way for a new fire station, Lotbiniere Panet and his sisters Margot and Suzanne McDougall, whose great-uncle Charles-Eugene Panet built the stone mansion in 1876.

He was the deputy minister for the Militia and Defence from 1875-1898 and the house was used by the family until shortly after the turn of the century when it became a rooming house. The star of the afternoon was the centre's unassuming patron, Toronto's Joan Chalmers, who gave a $l-million donation to the centre which was matched by the federal government. She greeted her special guests under a yellow-and-white striped Welcoming back conductor Mario Bernardi for his first concert in Ottawa in six years made for a late night last Wednesday. Following a performance by his orchestra, the Calgary Symphony, Bernardi, the founding director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and his wife Mona and soloist Judith Forst joined Harvie Andre, minister of regional industrial expansion and MP for Calgary Cen Ottawa's largest selection of PARTY DRESSES PROM DRESSES can be found at Sophistication Rideau Centre, 2nd Level 230-2424 HI- ill?
