the block since February. In addition to cable systems in northern Ontario, Northern Cable owns Mid-Canada, with its seven TV and 12 radio stations, including CHRO-TV in Pembroke. The sale has attracted interest from across the country. Now, it appears that Bradley himself has bought out the large stake in the company held by CUC a Scarborough-based cable company. Bradley will finance the acqusition by selling off Mid-Canada's broadcast 3J I The race for a new Ottawa television station is down to three horses.

Mid-Canada Communications a subsidiary of Sudbury-based Northern Cable Service has withdrawn its bid for an independent TV licence, Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission secretary General Fern Belisle said Friday. The decison came a day after the parent company reached an agreement to change ownership. Now the only remaining bids for a local independent licence are from Metro-TV Ltd. (backed by Montreal-based Lavalin Inc. and Edmonton-based Allarcom Toronto's CITY-TV, and Winnipeg's CanWest Broadcasting.

An earlier applicant, Selkirk Communications, retired from the competition after being purchased by McLean-Hunter Ltd. The sale of Northen Cable was completed late this week. "We're just tightening the strings and putting the cover on the front page now," Norm Bradley, the company's vice-president and general manager, said Friday. Bradley declined further comment until details of the agreement are released Monday, but sources said the company reluctantly decided to withdraw Mid-Canada's Ottawa bid Friday afternoon after consulting with the federal broadcast regulator. Northern Cable has been on finally melted away, it's hard to get worked up about cross-country skiing, bobsledding, and speed-skating.

Share The Flame: Calgary '88 doesn't go out of its way to help you get excited. The official film of the Calgary Olympics, a four-hour sleeper that drones on over two nights (Sunday and Monday at 9 p.m. on Channels 12 and 13), is only for the most dedicated sports fan. The film, by Bud Greenspan, tries to get under the Games's skin by focussing more closely on individual athletes, including Finnish ski jumper Matti Ny-kannen, Swedish cross-country skier Gunde Svan, and Netherlands speed-skater Yvonne van Gennip. But it reveals little new about the athletes, and since it focuses mostly on their performances at the Games, the whole thing seems dated and rather pointless.

There's not even any stunning cinematography to save it. Except for a few close-ups and the inevitable moody slow-motion shots, the film doesn't appear much different from what we got live on video a year and a half ago. There are some redeeming moments. The portrayal of Gae-tan Boucher's last Olympic competition, inter-cut with moving reaction shots from his parents the stand, is sensitively handled. But the film's approach as a whole, tends to be more prosaic.
