H6 THE OTTAWA CITIZEN SATURDAY, MAY 13, 1989 Religion I Ukrainian, Roman Catholic churches at odds a priest of the Ukrainian rite and professor of theology at St. Michael's College, says this is not true: "Bishop Borecky has built up the church over 40 years from scratch. It is now the best organized, best managed eparchy in the world." Ukrainian Catholics are pulled between loyalty to Borecky and to the Pope. They are reluctant to have western canon law applied to them since they anticipate that their new code of canon Law will continue to accept married priests in countries where this has been customary. Some Ottawa Ukrainians say "Bishop Borecky has been a good leader, supporter of the persecuted people of Ukraine and advocate for Ukrainian culture in Canada." Still others feel "Younger leadership may be needed to speak to a new generation of Ukrainian Canadian." (Father MacNeil is a Catholic priest working in Ottawa.) Catholic Church has accepted married priests in countries where this is the custom.

Married priests continue to function in the Catholic church of Ukraine which was forcibly united with the Russian Orthodox Church after the Communist revolution. Catholics resisting forced union were persecuted during the past 70 years, especially under Stalin. Archbishop Palmas' telegram reads: "The Holy Father asks that His Excellency, the Most Reverend Isidore Borecky, eparch of Toronto for the Ukrainian church, present his resignation to the government of his Eparchy. If he refuses, an apostolic administrator shall be appointed soon. An urgent answer is expected." An article in the Toronto Stat suggested that the resignation was demanded for "mismanagement" of the eparchy.

Father Petro Bilaniuk, Catholic church authorities have demanded the resignation of The Most Reverend Isidore Bo-recky, eparch of Toronto for the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Eastern Canada. He is 77. The action was initiated by Simon Cardinal Lourdusamy, head of the Congregation of Eastern Churches at the Vatican and conveyed to Bishop Borecky in a telegram from Archbishop An-gelo Palma, the Pope's envoy to Canada. The telegram has raised questions about relations between the Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Roman Catholic Church. Bishops in the Roman rite who reach the age of 75 are required by canon law to submit their resignation to the Pope.

The Ukrainian rite presently has no law concerning retirement, but the new code of canon law due in 1991 will contain one, says Citizen photo Rabbi Gershon Sonnenschein, left, with sofer Shabtai Interfaith services to oppose weapons exhibition Transcribing Torah work of Jewish art on Hiroshima. "Shabtai combines the two beautifully," said Bulka, adding that it is easy to identify a Torah written by an inexperienced sofer. Bulka said the laws and information written in the Torah are so sacred that if one becomes illegible or is destroyed in any manner, making it impossible for a sofer to fix, the Torah must be buried, Shabtai said that is rare, since most Torahs can be restored. If a n7Vivnti io sfointtal that itAnotn well as any members of the congregation who saw it fall, must fast for 40 days. Though the job of a sofer may seem tedious, Shabtai proudly recounted a story he felt made it all worthwhile. A fellow congregation member in Montreal brought him half of a Torah from Germany that ripped and stained with blood." It was used during the Holocaust and was smaller than the average Torah, so it could be hidden from the Nazis.

Incredibly, Shabtai discovered someone with the other half, in worse condition, with even more blood stains. After months of intense dedication he managed to restore the Torah, and called it a "once-in-a-lifetime experience." "If only the Torah had a mouth and could have said what had happened," speculated was in Ottawa recently for the dedication of two old Torahs from England which he restored for use by the Beth Shalom West Synagogue in Nepean. 10. 11 15 a Everybody Welcome St. Joseph's Parish Oblates of Mary Immaculate 151 Laurier Ave SUNDAY MASSES Sam, 10 lb a 12 noon Saturday 5pm Weekdays 1 noon By Ina Swedler Citizen correspondent For 24 years, Rafael Shabtai has painstakingly hand-written millions of letters contained in the most important readings in the Jewish religion the Torah. The handwritten, parchment scrolls containing the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy "take about two years and non-stop concentration to write," said Shabtai, whose thick accent tells one he is from the Middle East. One of only two full-time sofers scribes who write Torahs in Montreal, Shabtai came to Canada about 13 years ago from Jerusalem.

Torahs written and restored by Shabtai are used by synagogues in Canada, Israel and the U.S. Shabtai said a new Torah costs about $40,000. He said of the nearly 400,000 letters in the Torah, each one must be perfect and carefully checked, "to make sure everything is kosher." "Luckily, if you make a mistake on a Torah letter you can fix it," said Shabtai, "but with other Jewish writings you must begin again." He gave the example of a mezuzah, a small piece of parchment with Biblical passages rolled into a container, which Jewish people affix outside their home signifying a Jewish family lives there. He said they take a week to complete, and can be very frustrating if a mistake is made near completion. Shabtai writes other Jewish scriptures, to break up the monotony of Torah writing.

He restores about four Torahs a year. Shabtai labels himself an artist, and like others in that field, his work depends on his mood. "If I'm in a good mood, each column in the Torah goes well." Shabtai said the Torah is written on special parchment with a unique pen which comes only from Israel, where there are about 3,000 sofers. The ink is also from Israel, since making the ink is a very complicated process to duplicate, said Shabtai. Shabtai received a nine-month training course before he began his profession, "but the studying never ends." Although a sofer is not a rabbi, Rabbi Dr.
