Rockefeller swept to an unprecedented fourth four-year term last night, fashioning his largest landslide ever and delivering Democrat Arthur Goldberg to his first and last hurrah. Amid shouts of "No by his supporters at the Hotel Pierre, Goldberg conceded defeat at 11:07 p.m. Smiling, and surrounded by his wife and children, campaign managers, his running mate, Basil Paterson, and former Gov.

W. Averell Harriman, Goldberg said, "I accept the verdict of the people cheerfully. Now I shall return to the business of earning my living." Bedlam broke loose an hour later at the Hotel Roosevelt when Rockefeller, his wife, Happy, his running mates and former Gov. Thomas E. Dewey were greeted with a thunderous ovation by nearly 1,000 well-wishers.

Speaking without notes, the governor thanked Goldberg for "his wonderful statement" and "for the great work he has done for this country." He also had warm praise for Mario Procaccino and former State Supreme Court Justice Samuel Leibowitz, two Democrats who had bolted their party to endorse him. Charles Goodell to become the first third party candidate to win a U.S. Senate seat since 1940. Buckley, carrying the endorsement of the White House and championed by Vice President Agnew, piled up big leads in the suburbs and upstate to overcome Ottinger's power in New York City.
