J. O. AYER, Lowell, Mass. UNLAWFUL INQUESTS. The Taxpayers' Association Protests Against Paying Fees.

Much criticism has been beard because of the large number unnecessary and unlawful inquests being held by the Deputy Coroners, especially in the Shenandoah and Mahanoy valleys. Most of these cases are not such deaths as should have been inquired into by the Coroner, 88 the only object of an inquest is to aid in the detection of crime. Where it is apparent that the death has been caused by disease, suicide, pure accident or negligence of the deceased, no inquest is necessary, and if one is held the county cannot be charged with the costs. This is in accordance with a recent judicial decision. The Taxpayers' Association -have filed with the County Controller a protest against the payment of fees to Deputy Coroners in certain cases where inquests deemed to tiro have been unnecessary.

Out of the 75 inquests held during the past four months in the county, 35 of them are deemed illegal The Controller is holding the matter under advisement, and will consult his counsel. The inquests against which protests have been entered in this section are the follow ing: Kate Mary Shatzader, A. Kelly, all of Margaret Mahanoy Casserly City wind Resch and Wm. Rafe, Fountain Springs; Robert Grafton, Fountain Springs; Andrew Kohestoski, Shenandoah; Lewis Kososki, Mahanoy City John Groody, Shenandoah; Esther Strunk, Tamaqua; John Geban and unknown man, Fountain Springs; Martin O' Nell, Ashland Robert Mahanoy Wm. Novicz, Mahanoy City; Thomas Reed, Frackville; Peter Schager, Mahanoy City; Richard Hocking's child, Gilberton; Jerry Ziegler, Boston Run.

HERALD -The movement to change the tracks of the Schuylkill Traction Company from Coal street to Centre should continue to be agitated in the interest of the people of the boreugh in general. Coal street is not only the narrowest streets in the borough, but there is more traffic on that thoroughfare than any other in the town.

I haven't the highest regard for this corporation, but having occasion to use Coal street frequently I certainly approve of the change, and every teamster in the town, unless he has personal interests otherwise, will agree with me. Agitate the movement until the Town Council is brought to realize that the public interests demand that Coal street be abandoned by the electric railway. TEAMSTER. All flavors. Heaton knew the fellow and accepted the story a8 truth. Later he heard of the robbery referred to and recalled to mind that when he met Sherknis on Friday morning the latter's back was coated with flour. Heaton took this as a clue and last night Sherknis and Thomas Sawatska were arrested and charged with the robbery. PLACE MADE FOR COYLE.

Clerk in Banking Department Ousted to Make Room For Him. Harrisburg, May Commissioner Powers recently asked John W. Smith, of Bucks county, a clerk in his department carried on the contingent roll, to resign, and Mr. Smith has bowed himself out after serying four years. Smith demurred at first, but Powers told him he needed that place for a friend of the administration, and that the request for his resignation was one of the fortunes of war.

Smith was appointed under the Hastings regime, but since last January he has been a hot Quay man, and worked for Quay in Montgomery county. The fact that the Bucks county legislators all voted against Quay was partly responsible for his down-fall, and then there had to be a place made for ex-Senator Coyle, the pure patriot from Schuylkill, who is charged with trying to bribe legislators, and it is said that Coyle will take Smith's place. The salary is $100 a month and Coyle is expected to assume his duties next Thursday, and later be promoted to an examiner at salary of $10 8 day. Coyle says there is no truth in the story that he will tell all he knows if he is not given an office. WM.
