55 THE OTTAWA CITIZEN SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1988 F5 Sports piscines history with a spectacular display of control. "He pitched perfect. I guess that's the best way to describe it," Reds manager Pete Rose said. "He pitched perfect." He was even better than his previous brush with fame this season, when he had one of six no-hitters that have been broken up in the ninth inning this year. This time, he finished what he started for the first no-hitter in the major leagues since Milwaukee's Juan Nieves no-hit Baltimore on April 15, 1987.

"When I got to the eighth inning, I felt a little bit antsy," said Browning, 16-5. "I don't know how to explain it. Everything fell my way. "It was just one of those days where everything worked, and every ball was hit right at a single to Montreal's Wallace Johnson in the ninth. Browning had the Dodgers well in hand all the way.

Most of the balls hit were routine. He allowed nine balls to be hit out of the infield. Browning didn't need any spectacular plays from his teammates, but they were there when he needed them on well-hit balls. In the top of the fifth, third baseman Chris Sabo went behind the bag to snag a hard-hit grounder by Mike Marshall and throw the Dodger right fielder out by a half a step. That was the closest any of the Dodgers got to a hit against the hard-throwing Browning.

"Was he good?" Dodger manager Tom Lasorda said. "You don't get any better than perfect." It was the first time the Dodg- ers had been no-hit since Sept. 26, 1981 when Houston's Nolan Ryan beat them 5-0. Ryan is the all-time major-league leader with five no-hitters. The last perfect game thrown in the National League was Sandy Koufax of Los Angeles on Sept.

9, 1965, a 1-0 victory over Chicago. The first perfect game on record was by J. Lee Richmond in 1880. Before Friday night's performance, Browning was best known for his fine rookie season in 1985 when he had a 20-9 record and became the first rookie in 30 years to win 20 games. The 28-year-old Browning, a native of Casper, was the Reds' No.

9 draft choice in 1982. After his rookie season, Browning had a 14-13 record in 1986. He was 10-13 last season and spent part of the year in the minor Gruber powers Jays past Indians in 10th pm mm www wwn.iii.jii km mtm.mummmmniWi wfmuumimtmi jmw aaraiaaaaai people." In the ninth, Browning completed the perfect effort by getting Rick Dempsey on a fly ball to Paul O'Neill at the warning track in right field, Steve Sax on a grounder to shortstop Barry Larkin, and pinch-hitter Tracy Woodson on a swinging strikeout to end the game, bringing a stream of teammates onto the field for a pile-up near the mound. The Dodgers didn't come close to getting a hit and Browning didn't need any luck to pitch this no-hitter. "There weren't that many balls hit that hard, really," catcher Jeff Reed said.

Earlier this year, another Cincinnati pitcher came close to a perfect game when Ron Robinson was one strike away, but yielded 189 strikeouts, second in the National League to Houston's Nolan Ryan, who has 224. Worrell finished up for his 31st save. Cubs' rookie Mike Harkey, 0-2, allowed seven hits in eight innings as Chicago lost for the eighth time in nine games. He struck out four and walked four. Pirates 7, Phillies 5 PHILADELPHIA Bobby Bo-nilla had three hits, drove in three runs and scored the tie-breaker on Sid Bream's eighth-inning single, leading Pittsburgh to victory over Philadelphia.

Bonilla opened the Pirate eighth with a single, stole second, took third on shortstop Jackie Gutierrez's error and scored on Bream's line drive to left to break a 5-5 tie. The Pirates added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single by Andy Van Slyke. Reliever Jeff Robinson, 10-5, pitched two scoreless innings for the victory. Jim Gott closed out A 1 4V tfi I I leagues. Browning has won eight of his last nine decisions, and has lost just two games since June 6.

Browning got a decision for the first time in five starts this season against the Dodgers. He has allowed three earned runs or less in 25 of his 33 starts. Combined with his last start, he has retired the last 38 Dodger batters he has faced. Dodger starter Tim Belcher, 10-5, nearly matched Browning for the first five innings, allowing just a second-inning walk to Eric Davis. He lost his no-hitter and shutout when Larkin doubled with two outs in the sixth.

Sabo followed with a high bouncer to third, and Jeff Hamilton's throw in the dirt eluded first baseman Mickey Hatcher for an error, allowing Larkin to score. Tigers 8, Orioles 7 DETROIT Fred Lynn, traded from Baltimore to the Tigers last month, hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning that rallied Detroit over the Orioles and kept its hopes alive in the American League East. The Tigers' comeback came immediately after an 18-minute delay and enabled them to stay within five games of division-leading Boston. Detroit, which overcame an early 5-1 deficit, won for just the fifth time in 24 games. Twins 5, White Sox 4 MINNEAPOLIS Jim Dwyer and Gene Larkin hit consecutive home runs in the sixth inning and Kirby Puckett got a two-run double for his career hit as Minnesota beat Chicago.

Dwyer, who hit a grand slam in a 10-3 victory Thursday night, led off the sixth with his second homer, making it 4-4. Larkin followed with his seventh homer against Shawn Hillegas, 1-2. Angels 7, Rangers 2 ANAHEIM Wally Joyner hit a two-run double during a four-run first inning and Chili Davis had a two-run homer as California beat Texas and ended a five-game losing streak. Willie Fraser, 12-10, pitched four-hit ball for 6 Vi innings and won his sixth consecutive decision. Brewers 5, Mariners 1 SEATTLE Don August, a late replacement for Teddy Hi-guera, pitched a five-hitter and Robin Yount and Jeffrey Leonard each drove in two runs as Milwaukee downed Seattle.

August, 11-6, replaced Higuera, who warmed up prior to the game, but was pulled due to a strained left shoulder. Royals 3, Athletics 0 OAKLAND Mark Gubicza pitched a two-hitter and Kevin Seitzer's two-run double broke a scoreless tie in the eighth inning as Kansas City beat Oakland. Gubicza, 18-7, walked none and struck out eight in his third shutout. He out-pitched Bob Welch, 15-8, who finished with a four-hitter. Reds 1, Dodgers 0 Citizen news services CINCINNATI A pitcher can't be much better than Tom Browning was Friday night.

The Cincin-na ti lefthander didn't even come rlose to allowing a baserun-ner. let alone a base hit, as he pitched the 14th perfect game in major league history to beat Browning Simply perfect Los Angeles on a cool, damp night. He struck out seven and didn't go to three balls on any batter as he pitched his way into baseball Mets 4, Expos 3 news services NEW YORK In New York, they're already calling Gregg Jef-feries "The Natural." Jefferies was in the first slump of his big-league career, going hit-less in 13 at-bats through the fourth inning Friday night. But he broke out of it with a bang. He singled in the fifth and seventh and then singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, leading New York past Montreal.

The Mets have won eight of nine games and 18 of 23 as they continue their roll to the National League East title. The magic number is down to six and the lead remains at 11 games over the Pittsburgh Pirates, who beat Philadelphia 7-5 Friday night. Jefferies, batting .397 with 27 hits in 68 at-bats, has taken over New York's tabloids. One already has suggested that he be considered for rookie of the year, even though he was in the minors until the last week in August. There was also an article about his marketing and endorsement opportunities.

But then he went into that slump. "I knew it wasn't going to last, hitting .480," Jefferies said. "It was frustrating for a while, especially the first two times up when I lined out. I wasn't too worried because I was hitting the ball OK. I wasn't striking out or hitting choppers." Even though he was frustrated, Jefferies said he controlled his temper.

"If you saw me a couple of years ago, this place would have been wrecked," he said in the Mets clubhouse. "Helmets would have been broken." Joe Hesketh, 3-3, said the pitch was a slider in. "It's hard to pitch new batters," Hesketh said. "They don't get around the league and you don't get to see their strengths and weaknesses." Keith Miller started the ninth with a bouncer to shortstop that Luis Rivera dropped for an error. Mookie Wilson sacrificed and Tim Teufel grounded out before Jefferies was jammed and lofted a soft single to centre, his seventh hit in 13 at-bats against the Expos.

Randy Myers, 7-3, pitched 12-3 hitless innings, striking out three. He followed Terry Leach, who came in during the seventh after Bob Ojeda was injured when he fell attempting to field Johnny Umpire tries to calm Jim Rice after Sox slugger was hit Blue Jays 4, Indians 3 Citizen news services TORONTO Kelly Gruber, "disappointed" that the Blue Jays left the bases loaded in the ninth, took matters into his own hands in the 10th. Gruber seared a 2-0 fastball into the right-centre field alley, giving Toronto a win over the Cleveland Indians on Friday night. Tom Henke, 4-4, pitched the 10th to put Toronto four games over the .500 mark for the first time this season. Pinch hitter Pat Borders started the Toronto 10th with a single off Don Gordon, 2-4, and went to second on a walk to Ranee Mulliniks.

Jesse Barfield, who'd popped out with the bases jammed in the eighth, flew out to short centre and then Gruber came up. "In that situation, I'm just trying to get a base hit, I'm not trying to hit a home run," said Gruber. "I just didn't want to make sure I didn't pull off the ball, or top it." Cleveland stranded 13 runners and Toronto left 12 during the game. "We had five guys at third and didn't get one of them in," lamented Cleveland manager Doc Edwards. With the score tied 2-2 in the third, George Bell jumped on a Tom Candiotti pitch for his 22nd homer and 90th RBI.

Red Sox 7, Yankees 4 BOSTON Boston, spurred by Marty Barrett's tiebreaking double during a five-run fifth inning, stopped New York and increased its American League East lead over the Yankees. The Red Sox, trailing 2-0 just eight pitches into the game, rallied to win for the ninth time in 12 games. Boston also ended comparisons to the 1978 Boston massacre, the Yankees' four-game wipeout at Fenway Park in September in the midst of their miracle comeback. New York took the opener in the four-game series, beating Boston ace Roger Clemens 5-3 Thursday night. The Yankees brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings Friday night, but this time the Red Sox hung tough.

Trailing 1-0, Aldrete hit for Kevin Mitchell with two outs and the bases loaded. He lofted a soft liner into shallow centre that bounced off the glove of shortstop Rafael Ramirez, scoring Robby Thompson and Will Clark. Thompson started things for the Giants in the sixth with a two-out walk, followed by a ground-rule double by Clark.

Candy Maldo-nado was then hit by a pitch from Bob Knepper, 13-5, to load the bases and bring on reliever Larry Andersen. After Aldrete's two-run single, pinch-hitter Ernest Riles singled in Maldonado from third, and Kirt Manwaring doubled in Aldrete and Riles.
