"You must retain the skin's moisture. You must cleanse properly and moisturize and you must lubricate your skin. That is basic." An old, very old prune. Then you nervously crunch on the ever-available "water-foods," carrots, celery and cucumber, sitting atop the Lucite rolling ice bar in the salon foyer.

"You don't use an abrasive sponge on your face, do you?" Klinger asks with a note of genuine concern. "It is just so hard on the skin. It can do so much damage because it breaks the capillaries and you cannot repair them. Even if you have them treated, another one breaks because they are all connected." The Klinger skin-care conglomerate (estimated net worth is $15 million to $20 million U.S.) sells about 320 skin products. Klinger, the socially prominent skin-care specialist, has been caring for the skin styles of the rich and famous for half a century. She operates six posh skin and body care salons in Palm Beach, Bal Harbour, New York, Chicago, Dallas and Beverly Hills, Calif. She has kept the business all in the family, with Kathryn, now all grown up and with a beauty book of her own on the shelves, in charge of the Beverly Hills operation. In these modern fluxed times of improved this and extra that, it's hard to imagine sticking with one regimen or product for more than six months.
