It took two keys to open the box, one held by Louie and the other by Yoakum. Should Louie die in the meantime, Yoakum was to have his key. Benjamin was so enthused that he went to the President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, and offered the secret to the U.S. government.

Wilson sent some army brass to see Louie's demonstration, and they were extremely impressed. Everyone became so excited by the idea of gasoline for a penny a gallon that Louie had to start stalling the eager beavers. This is how one guy actually did put one over on some of the biggest financial wizards of his time.

I In 1916 most of the world was engaged in one of its periodic shoot-outs. Louie Enright was a little over 70, stood six feet tall, and had a white flowing beard. If he hadn't been in the con business he could have made a fortune selling southern fried chicken. an April, 1916, he called a press conference at his home in Farming-dale, Long Island. He announced he had invented a substance that, when mixed with water, turned into gasoline.

To be exact, one ounce of Louie's green substance plus one gallon of water produced a gallon of gas. Louie said the cost worked out to be a penny a gallon. To prove his point he showed the assembled reporters a four cylinder car end gave them a couple of ounces of his green liquid. The, reporters themselves mixed it with water and poured it in the tank. Front page news 'Much to their surprise, tlje engine turned over and they drove away.

The skeptical New York reporters didn't even trust Lpuie's water. They got some of their own from another source. But the car seemed to love the concoction, and chugged merrily along. JThe next day the story was front page news. Then who should show up at Louie's house, in a Ford, of course, but Henri himself.

Louie gave him the same demonstration as the reporters. Henry Ford drooled. He stayed with Louie for four days. Skeptical and suspicious. Ford finally satisfied himself that the invention was on the level.

He wrote Louie a cheque for $10,000 as a good-will gesture, with the understanding that details of a contract and the exact price would be worked out later. Once the magic of Ford's name was coupled to the invention there was no suppressing Louie or the public's interest. Investment money started to arrive at Louie's house with the daily mail delivery. Everyone wanted to get into the act. Louie said thanks, but no thanks.

He was out for bigger game. Hiram Maxim's father had invented the machine gun and Hiram ran the huge Maxim Munitions Works in New Jersey. With a war raging in Europe, to say Hiram Water plus was rich would be the understatement of the century. He was loaded. Sent cheque back Hiram went to see if he could make a deal with Louie.

After seeing the demonstration and driving around Farming-dale in Louie's car, he became a believer. Maxim wrote out a cheque for and in addition provided funds to build a lab to produce the green liquid beside Louie's house. The cumbersome details were to be worked out later. One of the details was a further payment of $900,000 when the first commercial batch of the miracle substance was produced. Louie sent the $10,000 back to the furious Ford.

He never even cashed the cheque. It now was a year since those reporters first met in Farmingdale. The U.S. had entered the war, and Hiram Maxim had the large and profitable task of providing his country with the necessary weapons. He lost interest in Louie and called off the deal.

Benjamin Franklin Yoakum, past president of the St. Louise and San Francisco Railroad was the next to approach Louie. Benjamin took in the impressive demonstration and as fast as you could say "sucker," he became Louie's partner. He put up $100,000 in cold cash. The only thing that bothered Yoakum was Louie's age.
