F.J. Shadd, M. D. Secretary, 901 St. n.

w. SECRET ORDERS, commander Council, the 111 who was then Chicago, October 29th, 189S The Illustrious L. Pulies, 330, grand secretary general. The clipping from tne Washington Bee came to hand and in reply to it I will state that in thejyear of 1S89 while 1 was serving: as lieutenant grand of the United Supreme Thornton A. Jackson, the sovereign grand commander, and Frederick C.

Revell, vas then grand secretary general. It was reported and stated that Thornton A. Jackson and Frederick C. Revell did issue a charter to a lodge in Florida under the United Supreme Council which I myself had notling to do with because it was done under the outhor-ity and direction of T. A.

Jackson who was then the soverign grand commander. In the year of iSos, when I was elected the sovereign grand commander, Illustrious Seville wanted to know if our United Supreme Council would organize lodges of Master Masons and give them a charaer in Washington, D. C. and other places and I distinctly and emphatically said: "No." He, Seville, referred me to the work that was done in Florida by Thornton A. Jackson.

I told him that it made no difference to me how much bogus and spurious work in masonery Thornton A. Jackson had ever done, that his work was no criterian for me and I refused to do it, and if he, Seville, says at any time that I have ever organized a lodge of master Masons in Washington or anywhere else in the world under our United Supreme Council, he is a falsifyer and 1 call upon him to name the lodge or the place that any work of that kind was done under me or by my sanction, advice and authority. Our United Supreme Council has no control or authority and has nothing to do whatever with the Entered Apprenticed Fellow Craft and Master Mason degrees. Those degrees are conferred in a Blue lodge working under a grand lodge, and I want it distinctly understood that I have got nothing to do with any of the work in the blue lodges nor do I claim to ex ercise any power or authority 01 control over them. I challenge any Mason in Washington to produce a documrnt of any kind where I authorized any blue lodges of Master Masons to assemble and work under the auspices of the United Supreme Council of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite.

In thtr year of 1S95 we had a consistory and a temple organizee at Grand Rapids, Mich and there was only one Grand Lodge in the State at that time and it was not under the national compact and I will give the sum of $100 to any mason who will prove that when we organized a consistory and temple at Grand Rapids, that it was under the national compact at that time. About a year ago they had a split in the grand lodges of that State and another independent grand lodge was organized, and so far as I know none of the subordinate lodges or the grand lodge either are under the national compact. Whoever says that 1 recommended or requested any lodge or body of masons to join the compact is a scoundrel, a rascal, a villian, a falsifyer. Yours fraternaly, John P. Jones 33, Supreme Grand Commander, JAMES M.
