Tuesday. August 8. 2000 A-5 FUGITIVE from A-3 Escapee surfaces 16 years later dirty clothes in a small cart and transport them to a loading dock. On May 29, 1984, as sheriffs deputies watched on video camera, Campbell jumped out of an unattended cart piled with dirty clothes and slipped under an automated door just as it was closing. The deputies sounded the alarm, but Campbell had already shed his jail garb, climbed a nearby wall and escaped.

A month later, the card signed by Campbell was mailed from San Rafael to the sheriff and "All Staff Marin County Jail." "With heartfelt sympathy and understanding thoughts in this time of sadness," the postcard stated. It's not clear exactly when Campbell left California for Michigan and adopted the name Leslie Calvin Aldrich. His parents live in the Detroit area, said Campbell's attorney, James Feinberg. Michigan authorities said Campbell had received an associate degree in nursing in 1987 from Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon, a small town in southwestern Virginia near the Tennessee border. He was then able to get a series of nursing jobs, alternating between Florida and Michigan.

In 1997, Campbell got into trouble for alleged drug use in Florida. The Palm Beach Post reported at the time that Campbell under the name Aldrich had his nursing license suspended after he tested positive for Demerol and amphetamine. He returned to Michigan, where a video camera later that year al legedly caught him stealing Demerol from Flint Osteopathic Hospital, where he worked as an emergency room nurse. But he disappeared before he could be arrested. He apparently returned to Florida at some point, where he got his license back and was working in an emergency room when a special unit of Michigan state troopers fi nally traced him and arrested him in June.

Campbell declined to enter a plea at his arraignment Monday in Genesee County Court. Under Michigan law, the judge entered a not guilty plea on Campbell's behalf, attorneys on both sides said. He faces a maximum term of four years behind bars in Michigan. Marin authorities have not filed an extradition request, but Aiello said they plan to do so. "After he was gone so long, we definitely won't let him get away," Aiello said.

But Feinberg said: "Hopefully, we'll be able to work out something favorable for him here and in California. 1 hope that he will be able get past all this to live a productive life with his family." "Ms. Harris is an excellent attorney, and this is one area where our attorneys can have a direct impact on the community," Renne said. "Ms.

Harris has a distinguished record of public service, and I am proud that she will be joining us here." District attorney's spokesman Gardner added: "It's a sad day for the district attorney's office. She's a good lawyer and well-liked and brilliant." Jim Herron Zamora of The Ex-amines staff contributed to this the future of the district attorney's office. Harris graduated from Hastings College of Law in 1989. She has also worked as a prosecutor in the Alameda County district attorney's office, and has taught advocacy skills at Stanford University andUSF. With the city attorney, she will head the Family and Children Services division, which represents the Department of Human Services in child abuse and neglect cases.

City Attorney Louise Renne said she was happy with the newest 6H Division chief quits DA's office gle with Darrell Salomon," one source said. Asked about any clash he had with Harris, Salomon declined to comment "This is a wonderful high-visibility new position for Kamala Harris in the city attorney's office, and we wish her well," Salomon said. Hallinan's spokesman, Fred Gardner, said the district attorney was out of town and unavailable for comment. Harris had held the same position at Hallinan's office since February 1998, prosecuting homicide, burglary, robbery and sexual assault cases. She was active in Hallinan's campaign and attended his December runoff victory celebration at Rasselas Jazz Club and Restaurant, speaking optimistically about ir- Xp I 1 fffepipw.
