C-14 Saturday, April 18, 1998 SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER FIGHT from C-l An expert for all seasons GREGORY LEWIS DWIGHTCHAPIN retreating into a simpler time, with hobby-related groups like the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society, which he heads. It now has more than 800 members in 41 states, Puerto Rico and Canada, he said, and "just keeps growing." The group has just issued a set of 41 art cards honoring past A's heroes, including three with strong Northern California ties, Eddie Joott, Sam Chapman and Ferris Fain. The cards ($18.50 postpaid) may be ordered by writing the society at P.O. Box 273, Abington, PA 19001. Taylor's pointed prose also returned to Sports Collectors Digest this month, his "Off the Cuff column once more becoming a weekly staple after a six-year absence.

"I plan to stay as a writer this time," he said. "I've always enjoyed that I reluctantly gave it up when I went to Fleer because I just didn't see it as a fit," THE COIL FCTDRS and was planning other informal appearances before the fight. "It's not so important that they come to see me," Tua said "What's important is I'm happy to see them." Tua, 29-1 with 24 KOs, comes from a boxing family. His father was a boxer in Samoa. Tua and all three of his brothers have held titles in New Zealand.

Tua has been with Duva since the "92 Olympics. "There aren't enough good things I can say about him," Tua said. "This is a team sport in the preparation, with your manager, your trainer and everyone else," he said. "But at the end, it's just you and a set of eyes coming at you." Those eyes Saturday night will belong to Cleveland Woods of Las Vegas, 14-8 with 10 KOs. Tua and Woods meet in the 10-round main event.

The fights begin at 7:30 p.m. with two four-round matches and a six-round fight. Fighters have yet to be announced. The semi-main event is an eight-round match between flyweights Carlos Madrigal, Oxnard, 8-1, 8 KOs; and Danny Rizzo, Napa, 6-4, 3 KOs. Duva tries to revive fight game said.

"He comes to fight He can punch like hell." Saturday night's card at the Cow Palace is a rare event San Francisco was once considered a good fight town, but that hasn't been the case since the 1950s and '60s. Duva was involved in a fight last year at Arco Arena in Sacramento. After Saturday's fight, he hopes to see more events in California and San Francisco in particular. "Baseball and football aren't the only thing," he said. "You've got some good fighters here." Duva isnt worried about re-educating the fans here, even with a sport with three sometimes conflicting governing bodies.

"Forget about that," he said. "Talk about the fighters. Talk about the California fighters. "We need to give them good fighters, give them some kids they can follow." Along those lines, Tua hopes to draw from San Francisco's Polynesian community. He visited a Sa-moan church Wednesday night 1.

THE AD has been running in Sports Collectors Digest for awhile now. At the top, it says, "Can you afford to hire Ted Taylor?" At the bottom, it says, "Can you afford not to?" A lot of people have hired H.R. "Ted" Taylor over the years, for a wide variety of jobs. It sometimes seems as if he's been everywhere and done everything in the sports collectibles field. Taylor, who started the Ted Taylor and Associates public relations firm with his son, Brett, a few weeks ago in Willow Grove, has been: A writer for Sports Collectors News and Sports Scoop and a Sports Collectors Digest columnist dating back to the early 1970s.

A hobby shop part-owner. A card set creator. Author of two books. First president of the Eastern Pennsylvania Collectors Club. Co-promoter of the legendary Willow Grove show.

Collectibles columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News for the last eight years. PR and hobby sales executive with FleerSky Box for six years. Short-time executive with another cardmaker, Score Board, which he is suing for civil fraud and breach of tract. In addition to wearing all those hats, Taylor managed to work in a Bowman baseball cards over the counter and began a lifetime of collecting. "I still enjoy it," the 57-year-old Taylor said.

"It's what I do. It defines what I'm about. I love it." As much as anyone, Taylor has seen the boom and bust of sports collectibles, the false highs of the late 1980s and early 1990s, the subsequent crash and now the struggling crawl back up. "I see a slow return to sanity" he said. "I think what's happening is a lot of bad actors have fallen by the wayside.

That's not to condemn the so-called investors. I think money will always be there for the old stuff. You see an awful lot of money changing hands in sports auctions these days." Like many oldtimers, Taylor is not a huge fan of new cards and collectibles, even though he has been closely associated with them as a manufacturers' representative and will be in his new PR capacity. But he sees the bigger picture. "Where the problem lies is in the greedy sports leagues and their high royalty and licensing fees," he said.

"They force manufacturers to create too much product to try to compensate for the licensing payments." Taylor seems most comfortable I I ft New stuff Premier Concepts, Inc. of Oswego, 111., has released 1998 Major League Baseball Premier Replays, a set of 20 5-by-7-inch motion image plaques. Carrying a suggested retail price of under $6 each, they'll be distributed through national chains, sports specialty stores and some hobby shops. The Giants' Barry Bonds is among the featured players. Premier Concepts president Rick Tollefton is looking at extending the line into football, basketball and hockey.

14-year stint in the athletic department at Spring Garden College in Philadelphia and another as athletic director and chairman of the physical education department at Philadelphia College of Textiles and Sciences.
