Timothy's Catholic LEKAS. George John Passed away In Oaklandon Monday, December 6, 1999 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born 1914 as George John Petrolekas In Harakas, Lakonla, Greece, he graduated with a degree In Law from the University In Athens; fought at the Albanian Front In 1940-4 1 and loined In the Greek Resistance against the Nazi occupation In WWII. He Immigrated to the United States In 1946 and studied Business Administration at UC Berkeley and earned his degree from Birmingham (Alabama) Southern College. A resident of Oakland since 1951.

he worked as a Public Accountant In San Francisco and Oakland. During 1967-74 he actively opposed the Greek military dictatorship in Greece. He was a member of several organizations. Including the Turtles and AHE-PA-Chapter 171. and a founding member of Ihe Hellenic American Professolnal Society, the Society of Greek Arts, and the Modern Greek Studies Foundation.

Throughout his life he contributed generously to numerous philanthropic and cultural causes and helped many Greek students and Immigrants settle In the U.S. George Is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years. Cleo; his three loving children John and Eula of Berkeley, and Nick and daughter-in-law Melanle; grandchildren Jesse. Tony. Callle and Katie of Los Angeles.

He Is also survived by brother Christ and sister-in-law Alexandria of Oakland: sisters Vaslllkl and Koula: and brothers Sotirl and Panagioti of Greece; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews: and preceded In death by brothers Constantlne and Michael. She was Instrumental In bringing bold and ambitious new music and music theatre tothe Bay Area. Asa tireless fund-raiser, promoter and producer, she Is credited with helping to establish the Importance of emerging experimental music tendencies which encompassed minimalism.

rock-Infused and world music based styles as well as builders of new instruments and sound Installations. Over twenty years she produced Important works by Paul Dresher, Anthony Davis. Phil Glass. Peter Sellars, Jon Hassell, Rinde Eckert and George Coates. She began her career at the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College, where she was Administrative Director from 197010 1980.

In 1981 she produced New Music America in San Francisco, a nationally acclaimed festival of experimental music. In 1976 she created the 'Speaking of Music' series at the Exploratorlum which she produced until 1983. when she became the Associate Director of the American Music Center in New York. In 1984 Robin and Paul Dresher founded the Paul Dresher Ensemble. She served as the Ensemble's Executive Director and worked diligently to establish the Ensemble as a vigorous ongoing presence on the local and national scene.

The couple was married In 1986. Her commitment to her community entered the public arena when she produced 'Aid and Comfort', a benefit concert and dinner sponsored by the University of California at Berkeley and leading Bay Area restaurants. Hosted by Laurie Anderson and Bobbie McFerrin, the event featured Philip Glass, the Kronos Quartet. Herbie Hancock and John Adams with the Berkeley Symphony. Michael Frank Passed away peacefully at his home In San Francisco on Dec. 7, 1999 after a lengthy stuggle with cancer of the liver. Michael was 44 years old. A graduate of Stanford University In engineering, former vice president at OUME (a computer hardware manufacturer) and finally vice president of MWA Consulting, inc. of Palo Alto, an industry-analyst organization that focuses on printing and Imaging Issues.

He is survived by parents, Frank and Suml Sugihara of Pinole; sister, Dr. Corlnne Sugihara Jaffe of Irvine; brother-in-law Bruce Philip Jaffe: niece. Nicole Klki Jaffe: grandparents. Iwao and Ayako Ozawa; a dear friend and partner. Dirk Burns: and many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Bernhardt Retired Berkeley optometrist, died at his home in Kensington. He was 82. The native of Toledo. Ohio lived in Berkeley and Kensington for over 53 years. He received his bachelor's degree In Conservation of Wildlife and Natural Resources from Colorado State College In 1939.

and earned a degree in optometry from the University of California In 1948. He began his practice of optometry In Berkeley In 1954 and retired In 1983. In 1954 he co-founded California Vision Services (now Vision Service Plan) and served as its first president until 1960. He continued to serve as a board member and actuary until 1970. The concept of prepaid vision care was developed by Dr.

Thai and others in the Alameda-Contra Costa County Optometrlc Society. This concept grew to a one billion-dollar business for Vision Service Plan by Its 45th birthday. The California and American Optometrlc Associations, by resolution of their Houses of Delegates, acknowledged Dr. Bernhardt Thai as the 'Father of Prepaid Vision Care'. In 1958 he founded the optometrlc assistants' program at Merrltt College in Oakland and served on Its Board of Advisors until 1965.

In 1970 Governor Ronald Reagan appointed him to the State Board of Optometry, where he served as president from 1973 to 1975. Dr. Thai's honors Include the California Optometrlc Association Distinguished Service Award. Optometrist of the Year Award. Outstanding Service Award and University of California School of Optometry Alumnus of the Year Award.

He received the Alta Bates-Herrick Hospital Foundation Outstanding Service Award and Distinguished Service Award. During World War II he served with distinction in the South Pacific flying B-25s. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, eight Air Medals and a Presidential Citation. His community activities included Chairman of the Visiting Nurses Association Board of Directors. Berkeley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Chairman of the Alta Bates-Herrick Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees. Alta Bates Corporation Board and Alta Bates-Herrick Hospital Board. Survived by wife of 57 years. She attended Lowell High School and graduated from the California College of Arts Crafts with a degree In Graphic Design. In 1982, Lorraine moved to New York City to pursue her career In graphic design. New York proved to be the place that presented Lorraine with opportunities to challenge and showcase her design talents. Lorraine did many cover designs for books from Random House, Knopf. Atlantic Monthly and Ecco Press.

She created the format for the Vintage Contemporary series of paperback books, and designed covers for popular novels such as "Bright Lights. Big "Ellen Foster" and The Joy Luck Lorraine's work has been profiled In both Newsweek and Esquire magazines and trade publications such as How and Print. She is included In "A History of Graphic Design" by Phil Meggs.
