Chicago Cleveland Dallas H. Worth Denver Detroit El Paso Honolulu Houston Indianapolis Kansas City Lake lahoe Las Vegas Louisville -S, Los Angeles Mostly 7956 clear and breezy on Thursday Woman gives day after arrival By John Curran ASSOCIATED PRESS FORT DIX, J. A Kosovo refugee woman gave birth to a brand new little American on Thursday, the day after she was airlifted to sanctuary from the chaotic Balkans. The 7-pound, 7-ounce boy is the first child for the woman and her husband, said officials at Virtua Health Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly. Information on the mother and child's condition was not immediately available.

The 21-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was one of 453 refugees from Kosovo who arrived in New Jersey on Wednesday. They were met by first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and U.S. officials who are coordinating the $100 million resettlement effort that has transformed this old Army base into a modern-day Ellis Island. The woman's husband was with her, hospital spokeswoman Anne Beattie said. She said she hasn't seen the husband, but, "I'm sure he's very excited." The woman had been taken to the hospital on a stretcher after her arrival because she appeared to be suffering from dehydration.

Hospital officials said earlier Thursday that she was all right but would be kept there to await her child's birth. As the other refugees the first victims of Yugoslavian "ethnic night. The first wave of refugees fleeing the squalor and deprivation of Balkan border camps emerged Wednesday from the chartered 747, some smiling, some toting carry-on luggage and many wearing winter garb despite the 70-degree New Jersey weather. Some of the refugees appeared tired after the 13-hour flight from Macedonia, especially the elderly men and the women carrying children. Many of the new arrivals waved at air base personnel and local dignitaries who greeted them with spurts of applause. They then filed into buses that took them to a private reception with Rodham Clinton and other dignitaries, including Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala. "We know that most of all you want to be reunited with friends and family and to return to your homes and live in peace," Rodham Clinton said as she stood under a banner that read "Mirsevini Ne Amerike, Welcome to America." "This is the goal that the United States and our NATO allies share, and we will not let Mr.

Milosevic succeed in keeping you out of your homes," she said. Many in the audience broke into enthusiastic applause as her pledge was translated into Albanian. "I know you are tired, but you look very good to me," the first lady said. "We want you to hear that the American people are very sad and very angry to see what happened to you in the last weeks and months. Our hearts and our prayers have been with you, and now we want to show you our homes are open to you, too." After her remarks, she greeted the refugees with handshakes.
