Out of this boom a dog named Sandy got his own dressing room and Al Pacino started getting known as the male Greta Garbo. Don't do it, Al.

It was AI's 37th birthday. He was so secretive, only a few of us knew he and his luscious German-speaking protectress Marthe Keller slipped off to be alone. AI's worth millions for pictures. He's Lawrence Olivier, he's even bigger than Farrah Fawcett-Majors. The Michael of "The Godfather" kept the flower of the Broadway press (of which I am the cactus) waiting for an hour at the opening night party.

He wanted no photographers. They got the picture. It's always going to be like that, Al. They'll get your picture. What the hell does it hurt anyway? Is that bad, being on the front page.

The producers of his new show, "The Basic-Training of Pavlo Hummel," are so damned nervous about him being nervous, "Oh, don't talk to him he's so sensitive, so dedicated, so immersed in his work." They walk around almost on tip-toe as though Al is God. "How'd it go, Al?" I asked him. "Oh, I got through it, I survived," he said. No big deal. Al once said that he started drinking at 13, went on the wagon and stayed on.

He's honest. Wouldn't let them run ads saying his show's a hit till it was. Doesn't bleed the show for any big salary. He just loves the show and what it says. Just don't be a Garbo, Al.

Give out some interviews, pose for some pictures You might not feel so immersed. THE MIDNIGHT EARL Sonny and Cher requested separate dressing rooms for their show at Westbury Music Fair but used only one. Sonny's gal was there; Cher's husband wasn't. Each Cher gown was bare, front, back and center Julie Harris is marrying Walter Carroll, a writer friend for 30 years, at Serling, resuming her tour in "Belle of Amherst." 3-8 Hollywood Squares t5) Price Is Right G( Villa Alegre "60 Minutes" is becoming the New Times of television. Count on the show for a cynical, wiseguy attitude that at times would make a college sophomore blush. In its segment on the Nixon-Frost interviews which will air tomorrow night at 7:30 on Channel 5, "60 Minutes" adopted the lily-pure pose of asking Frost where he got off "buying" a former president's appearance. This is the same show, remember, that paid Bob Haldeman six figures to talk. Wallace's surprise that Frost would expect Nixon to tell the truth was amazing to behold.

You would think Wallace never arranged an interview with someone he didn't expect to spill all. Frost got the last laugh, though. When Wallace asked Frost "Do you really expect Nixon to tell everything?" Frost said he was expecting a "cascade of candor." Summoning his best surprised voice Wallace asked, "You mean to say he'll bare his breast?" And Frost said, "Perhaps not, but I thought 'cascade of candor' was a phrase that would appeal to you." THE REPOSSESSED Following "The National Disaster Survival Test" Sunday night was a real disaster, an NBC pilot called "The Possessed." It starred James Farentino as a priest who had let things slip a little (he described himself as "an alcoholic, an adulterer and worse" worse?) and as a result found himself face to face with a Voice who told him he had gotten God mad at him and the only way out of the pickle was to seek out evil and eradicate it. The evil most evident in this turkey was in the producers' minds, for they turned out a perverted classic of some kind. The action took place in a private girls' school which looked like a finishing school for $500 hookers.

The teachers looked like men in drag (except the one male teacher, I mean) and talked to each other with teeth bared and tongues slightly darted out. One student was the daughter of a teacher, but they conversed like lovers, not mother and daughter. The one male teacher was having an affair with a student, and the couple's dialogue was enough to exorcise a thousand demons. "Come back in the biology lab," said the salacious little girl, "and I'll teach you about the chicken and the egg who comes first." Get it? The script was nearly incomprehensible, as though the actors were party to a secret too horrible to share with the viewer. The plot concerned a teacher (Joan Hackett) who had been possessed by the Devil, I think, although the plot might also have been about someone who kept throwing kerosene on people's sleeves.

In classic TV practice, NBC should rework the show and make Farentino a mortgage officer for a big bank who has fallen behind on his loan payments and has to get back on the bank's good side by seeking out delinquent mortgagees. It could be called "The Repossessed." THE DISASTER TEST Kudos to NBC for "The National Disaster Survival Test." The fact that most studio respondents got a poor rating (and I did too, taking the test at home) means that most people in the country are poorly prepared for mishaps, big or small. The show was a professional attempt to get important information across. Using big names Kate Jackson, John Amos, Wally Schirra and Shana Alexander kept people tuned in, as did the excellent film footage. Speaking of the film, wasn't it a news director's delight? All those flames, floods, hurricanes and crying people without any news to ruin the excitement.
