Both spots are visited twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Hapuna Express leaves Hilo in the morning and makes various stops along the island's Gold Coast, that section of west Hawaii that is rich with wide, white sand beaches. Final destination is Kailua-Kona, then the City of Refuge, one of Hawaii's most sacred historical sites.

These dally excursions delight visitors because, more often than not, a passenger with a ukulele will serenade all the way to the down the lush coastline of Hamak-ua with its thousands of acres of sugar cane on one side and steep cliffs and roaring surf on the other. The Hamakua coast route is traversed over numerous bridges spanning the many deep green gullies formed by years of water runoff from the seasonal sncws of MaunaKea. The trip takes three hours and affords the rider three hours of sightseeing and shopping in Hilo before the bus returns to Kona. One way fare is $2. Another Interesting route is that from Pahoa to Hilo.

It crosses the vast Puna district, where wild wood orchids grow in profusion along the highway and where anthuriums and papayas are grown and harvested for shipment to buyers all over the world. Two round trips from Hilo are available each day and the fare is 75 cents. The Hilo to Waiohinu bus makes its way at about 2:40 each afternoon through the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home of Kilauea Volcano, one of the world's most active. An overnight stay at the world-renowned Volcano House hotel is possible since the bus doesn't return to Hilo until the next morning (but reserve well In advance). You could also continue southward for after leaving the volcano, the Hele-On continues through the Ka'u Desert, terminating its run in Waiohinu, the southernmost community in the United States.

Mark Twain spent much time in Waiohinu. The fare to the volcano is $1 and to Waiohinu it's another 50 cents. For outdoors enthusiasts, Hele- of Hele-On has to be one Hawaii's best vacation buys. A special tourist oriented route called the Banyan Shuttle begins from the Banyan Drive hotel area and carries riders to the three major shopping centers, the Hilo Civic Center, the state's Wailoa Information Center, Shinmachi Memorial, Lyman House and Museum, and Rainbow Falls. The shuttle operates on an hourly basis and the fare is 25 cents from point to point There's even a Hele-On VIP Pass that can be purchased for $1. It entitles the holder to unlimited rides for a whole day on all the city's buses.

In the popular district of the Kona Coast, two routes provide transportation from historic Kailua HILO, Hawaii Bus riding has become a favorite pastime for thousands who are finding the Hele-On bus a fine way to travel around Hawaii's largest island. Hele-on is local Hawaiian lingo for moving on. The Hawaii County Mass Transit System began its Hele-On network in December, 1975. It has 15 buses that operate on 15 different island-girdling routes. The buses cover more than 1,500 miles daily, are air-conditioned and seat from 22 to 42 passengers.

Fares range from 25 cents within the city of Hilo and the district of Kona to $2 on the cross-island route, linking the two major tourist destination areas.
