He was 78. Mr. Leong began his commitment to On Lok, a nationally recognized agency that provides health care services to the elderly, in 1976, when he became treasurer of the board. Aside from offering his business skills and leadership, Mr.

BEECHAM, Dorothy F. Mrs. Beecham, 79, of Medford, died Monday, April 12, 1999, af the Providence Hospital in Medford. She was born July 10, 1919 at Wichita, Kansas the daughter of Ella and Carl Lyman. She was raised in Portland, Oregon and graduated ftom Grant High School.

She lived in Portland till the late 50's when she moved to San Francisco. Mrs. Beecham worked as a secretary for in San Francisco and moved to Medford in 1996. Surviving are two cousins. Patti Kinney of Ashland and Susan Stem of Milwaukee.

"Harding has been an invaluable link between On Lok and the community," Jennie Chin Hansen, executive director of On Lok, said last year when Mr.

Leong was given the 1998 Giving Something Back Award for his service. "Through his actions he instills such basic values as a genuine concern for others and a deep involvement in one's community." Mr. Leong was a fourth-generation San Franciscan who attended Commerce High School, where he was an All-City football player, and then went to City College of San Francisco until the begining of World War II. He served in the Coast Guard and the Navy in the South Pacific during the war. Harding Leong chose On Lok as the place he wanted to die his own home up as collateral to secure a loan for the purchase of a site.

After college he worked on the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. In the mid 30's he was employed as a steel engineer for Western Pipe Steel of South San Francisco. He remained in the steel industry until his retirement from U.S. Steel of Pittsburgh, PA in 1971. He moved to Atherton, CA and consulted for Progressive Fabricators, St.

Louis, MO, Marathon Steel Phoenix, AZ. and F.M. Weaver Landsdale, PA. Mr. McPherson was an avid hiker, reaching the summits of Mt.

Saint Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Adams in WA and six other mountain peaks in CA. He loved golf and was a former member of the San Francisco Golf Club, Olympic Club, Presidio Golf Club, Rolling Rock Club, and Laurel Valley in Ligonier, PA. He was an active member of the Fox Chapel Golf Club, Pittsburgh, PA.

Mr. McPherson was president of the San Francisco Junior Chamber of Commerce, two-term president of the National Corrugated Steel Pipe Association, and on the board of the Hamarville Rehabilitation Center, Hamarville, PA. Together with other Chinatown merchants, Mr. Leong created the Portsmouth Square Garage, highly unusual in that it operates as a nonprofit organization, and was manager of it since its opening in 1964. Mr. Leong's vision, that the garage would be a boon for merchants in Chinatown and North Beach, proved true.

Mr. Leong moved with his family to El Cerrito about 45 years ago. He was known for his support and volunteer work at many organizations, including the Guardsmen, for which he was past chairman of the annual campership 1 fund; the Boy Scouts of America; YMCA; Cameron House; Chinese Recreation Council; St. Mary's Chinese Mission; and Berkeley Chinese. He was a life member of the California Historical Society, California PTA and Chinese American Citizens Alliance. Mr. Leong was married for 51 WHITTAM. James Ph.D. Dr.

Whittam, President and CEO of the San Franciscobased Shaklee Companies, died April 15, 1999, at Stanford University Hospital after along and heroic battle with cancer. He was 49. Both a scientist and business leader, Dr. Whittam played key roles in the operations of the domestic and international Shaklee marketing operations as well as science and technology functions. Dr.

Whittam spearheaded the establishment of Yamanouchi Shaklee Pharma (YSPharma, Inc.) in 1997. Located at Stanford Research Park. YSPharma, Inc. is dedicated to the development of novel drug delivery technologies, representing the pharmaceutical division of Shaklee Corporation. His professional experience also included top management research and development positions at Procter Gamble, Vidal Sassoon and The Gillette Company.

Successfully operating in the academic, scientific and business worlds, he was unique in the industry as the only scientist to head a major direct-selling company. Born in Queens. New York in 1949. Whiftam was graduated magna cum laude from New York City College in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. He taught chemistry at City University of New York (CUNY) while earning his Ph.D: there in chemistry and biochmistry in 1975.

CUNY honored Dr. Whittam with the Curtman and Myron Pantzer Awards. He then went on to complete an MBA degree from Boston University School of Management in 1977. A Bay Area resident for over 20 years, Dr. Whittam served on various community boards, including the UCSF Foundation's Science Committee.

He was a member of numerous professional and scientific organizations and has published extensively in scientific and trade journals. An avid runner and athlete, Dr. Whittam competed in both the Boston and New York marathons as well as numerous local races. He served as a member of the U.S. Ski Team Sports Medicine Council and as nutritional consultant to the U.S.

Ski Team for eight years. Along with William L. Haskell. Ph.D. of Stanford University and the American College of Sports Medicine, he initiated one of the first academic conferences on "Nutritional Determinants in Athletic Dr.

Whittam is survived by his wife Sibylle; daughter Lauren; and sons Christopher and Alexandre of Hillsborough, CA. as well as his mother. Celeste was the loving wife of Edward Engelsen, a retired vice president from Union Bank. Celeste worked for many years as a fur finisher, sewing silk linings into fur coats. The Engelsen's recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Celeste has a scholarship in her name at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. The scholarship suppots native Ecuadorian students in their college studies.

Celeste will be remembered for her generosity and devotion to her family and friends. Services have been held at Cypress Lawn in Colma. Leong was well known for his support and volunteerism with many organizations, including The Guardsmen, Boy Scouts of America, YMCA, Cameron House, Chinese Recreation Council. St. Mary's Chinese Mission, Berkeley Chinese Community Church and On Lok Senior Health Care, where he was one of the principal organizational architects. He recently completed his eighth term as presIdent of the Board of Directors of On Lok. in Midland, Mich. in 1939. There he helped design and construct an electron diffraction apparatus. Electron Diffraction was not in wide use at the time. Lorenzo helped develop E.D.

as a crystallographic tool and published many theoretical and experimental papers on E.D. and soon achieved world recognition in the field of electron crystallography. Most of his work was related to Magnesium Metallurgy, surface coatings, and intermetallic compounds. In 1960 Lorenzo moved to California to work in the Dow chemical company's Western Division. Then he made his home in Walnut Creek, Ca until his disabling strokes.

Most of Lorenzo's friends remember him as an accomplished magician and slight-of-hand artist. He gave many shows to various groups while at the Citadel like cadet gatherings, church groups or children's parties. These shows continued even at the Univ. of Ky. He is survived by his sister Annie Laurie Gebaurer of SC.
