Survivors include two brothers, Marshall and Douglas, both of San Francisco; sisters-in-law Camille and Vernice Leong, both of San Francisco; a daughter, Dee Dee, of El Cerrito; a son, Kevin, of Alameda; two grandsons; and numerous relatives. Private graveside services took place at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland Monday. Together with other Chinatown merchants, Mr. Leong created the Portsmouth Square Garage, highly unusual in that it operates as a nonprofit organization, and was manager of it since its opening in 1964.

Mr. Leong's vision, that the garage would be a boon for merchants in Chinatown and North Beach, proved true. Mr. Leong moved with his family to El Cerrito about 45 years ago. He was known for his support and volunteer work at many organizations, including the Guardsmen, for which he was past chairman of the annual campership fund; the Boy Scouts of America; YMCA; Cameron House; Chinese Recreation Council; St Mary's Chinese Mission; and Berkeley Chinese.

Community Church. He was a life member of the California Historical Society, California PTA and Chinese American Citizens Alliance. Mr. Leong was married for 51 He helped nurture the agency's development from one facility on the border of Chinatown and North Beach to its current size of six facilities that offer everything from medical care to educational and exercise programs. "Harding has been an invaluable link between On Lok and the community," Jennie Chin Hansen, executive director of On Lok, said last year when Mr.

Leong was giv-, en the 1998 Giving Something Back Award for his service. "Through his actions he instills such basic values as a genuine concern for others and a deep involvement in one's community." Mr. Leong was a fourth-generation San Franciscan who attended Commerce High School, where he was an All-City football player, and then went to City College of San Francisco until the begining of World War II. He served in the Coast Guard and the Navy in the South Pacific during the war. those who could donate money.

He served as president of the board for eight years, retiring from the board in 1998. When he became ill with cancer, On Lok was where Mr. Leong wanted to go even though he'd lived for more than 40 years in the East Bay, according to his son Kevin, who, along with other family members, continues Mr. Leong's legacy of volunteer work at On Lok. "He knew his days were limited and he wanted to be at On Lok," said Kevin Leong.

"He chose to go there." Mr. Leong was one of a handful of organizational architects at the agency. He was 49. Both a scientist and business leader, Dr. Whlttam played key roles in the operations of the domestic and International Shaklee marketing operations as well as science and technology functions. Dr. Whlttam spearheaded the establishment of Yaman-ouchl Shaklee Pharma (YSPharma.

lnc.) In 1997. Located at Stanford Research Park, YSPharma. Inc. Is dedicated to the development of novel drug delivery technologies, representing the pharmaceutical division of Shaklee Corporation. His professional experience also included top management research and development positions at Procter ft Gamble, Vidal Sassoon and The Gillette Company.

Successfully operating In the academic, scientific and business worlds, he was unique In the Industry as the only scientist to head a maior direct-selling company. Born in Queens. New York In 1949, Whlttam was graduated magna cum laude from New York City College In 1972 with a bachelor's degree Inchemical engineering. He taught chemistry at City University of New York (CUNY) while earning his Ph there in chemistry and blochmistry in 1975. CUNY honored Dr.

Whittam with the Curt-man and Myron Pantzer Awards. He then went on to complete an MBA degree from Boston University School of Management in 1977. A Bay Area resident for over 20 years. Dr. Whittam served on various community boards.

Including the UCSF Foundation's Science Committee. He was a member of numerous professional and scientific organizations and has published extensively In scientific and trade iournals. An avid runner and athlete. Dr. Whittam competed In both the Boston and New York mara-' thons as well as numerous local races.

He served as a member of the U.S. Ski Team Sports Medicine Council and as nutritional consultant to the U.S. Ski Team for eight years. Along with William L. Haskell.

Ph.D. of Stanford University and the American College of Sports Medicine, he Initiated one of the first academic conferences on "Nutritional Determinants In Athletic Performance." Dr. Whittam Is survived by his wife Sibylle; daughter Lauren; and sons Christopher and Alexandre of Hillsborough, CA, as well as his mother, Barbara Whittam; sisters Denlse Whlttam and Barbara Schechter: and brother Dennis Whlttam, all from the New York area. In the mid 30 he was employed as a steel engineer for Western Pipe Steel of South San Francisco. He remained in the steel industry until his retirement from U.S. Steel of Pittsburgh.

McPherson was an avid hiker, reaching the summits of Mt. Saint Helens. Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Adams In WA and six other mountain peaks in CA.

He loved golf and was a former member of the San Francisco Golf Club, Olympic Club, Presidio Golf Club, Rolling Rock Club, and Laurel Valley In Llgonier, PA. He was an active member of the Fox Chapel Golf Club, Pittsburgh. PA. Mr. McPherson was president of the San Francisco Junior Chamber of Commerce, two-term president of the National Corrugated Steel Pipe Association, and on the board of the Hamarvllle Rehabilitation Center, Hamarvllle, PA.

In Midland. Mich. In 1939. There he helped design and construct an electron diffraction apparatus. Electron Diffraction was not In wide use at the time.

Lorenzo helped develop D. as a crystallographic tool and published many theoretical and experimental papers on D. and soon achieved world recognition In the field of electron crystallography. Most of his work was related to Magnesium Metallurgy, surface coatings, and intermetalllc compounds. In 1960 Lorenzo moved to California to work In the Dow chemical company's Weslern Division.

Then he made his home in Walnut Creek, Ca until his disabling strokes. Most of Lorenzo's friends remember him as an accomplished magician and slight-of-hand artist. He gave many shows to various groups while at the Citadel like cadet gatherings, church groups or children's parties. These shows continued even at the Univ. of Ky.

ENGELSEN, Celeste Was born In Ecuador on March 8. 1924. She died on April 1, 1999. Celeste was the loving wife of Edward Engelsen, a retired vice president from Union Bank. Celeste worked for many years as a fur finisher, sewing silk linings into fur coats.

The Engelsen's recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Celeste has a scholarship in her name at Linfield College in McMlnnvllle, Oregon. YMCA, Cameron House, Chinese Recreation Council, St. Mary's Chinese Mission, Berkeley Chinese Community Church and On Lok Senior Health Care, where he was one of the principal organizational architects. He recently completed his eighth term as president of the Board of Directors of On Lok.

Harding was married for 51 years to the late Dorothy Lowe of Oakland and leaves behind daughter Dee Dee of El Cerrito; son Kevin and daughter-in-law Cathyof Alameda-and grandsons Blake and Ryan.
