TYSON. Alia Oik Vf PHI JuKtu I (n KM) WADOCll.MHlAryflt. IIMANSKV.ray wf ANDREW DAVIS, UNDERGROUND MAN SoIbcU a log for th Franklin atova Inilda Cave man cost-cutting "Being underground Is what makes It work," Davis says. "Dirt Is a constant temperature of 58 degrees inter and summer. AH I've Rot to do Is raise the temperature from 58 to 70 degrees.

That 'i only 12 degrees." "If It's 10 below outside, people In a house have to rai.se the temperature from 10 below to 70 70 degrees. That's 80 degrees." The little heat Davis needs Is provided by a wood burning Franklin stove. Davis says bis plush carpeted, modern cave home has a numlxT of other advantages: "Tornadoes can't bother us. Fire canl hurt us. I donl even carry Insurance on It." "Just 20 miles from here we're building a nuclear power station.

You never know what could happen. If there was an explosion It wouldn't bother me. They say three feet of dirt would protect you from fallout. I've got a bomb shelter." ARMINGTON. (ITI) Andrew Davii rew ntetl upending hundreds of dollar tn heating bills, so he became a caveman.

Now bis heating bill Is W2D fur the whole winter. Davis shrucced it off when bis daughters feared Uielr classmates would call tlu'tn the nuiLstones. And he Ignored the skeptical looks of neighbors when he started hollowing out a bilbidc to build bis new home. Davis is a bearded, year-old electrician, with a sturdy, meman like build. After discing out the hill, he shaped stone cave walls eicht Inches thick to form a one level, three-bedroom abode.

He topped it with a foot thick stone ceiling and covered the cave with four feet of dirt. Now his family is delighted and most of his neighbors are envious. "It's nice and warm." says his wife. Margaret. "It's just wonderful.

It's not costing us anything to heat and I don't think of it as being any different than a house." UTAH, DM In (hit City, itnut't it I nadir 01 uv, WMonn, u'vvO't hhiuo (tovoleO rtuibaim. (APk-Tom Heckenbach. a high school teacher who wants only to live the simple life, is defending his home with a gun. "1 donl go In for physical violence," the 32-year-old said last week. "It Just doesn't fit me, but sometimes you get pushed Ith your back to the wall" Heekenbach's unusual "back-to-nature" life style such as heating bis seven-room ranch house for 140 winter with salvaged wood, corn cobs and cheap coal received national publicity last month.

Since then he has received notes threatening his life. His home on a one-acre plot in unincorporated Palatine Township has been vandalized. His four goats and most of his 40 chickens and 15 ducks have been slaughtered and mutilated. An outlying shed was torched. He returned home recently to find one of his goats slashed to death and a note tacked to his front door warning: "You get the same." "I'm scared.

Scared and mad," he said. "At first, I Just wondered 'Why don't they leave me alone?" Then, after more of my stock was slaughtered and my shed was set on fire Well, passive nonviolence went out the window. They're not going to chase me out of here. No way." He uses electricity only for operating a well and, occasionally, a refrigerator. "I like It It's self-reliant," he said.

"I've got more control over my environment than anybody I know." But neighbors have complained about the appearance of Heekenbach's yard, which Is strew ith lumber, tools and a tractor. "I guess they forget what the place looked like when I bought it. I must have cleared out a dozen abandoned cars and taken down 40 dead trees." "Darn It. I pay my taxes and pay my mortgage and everything else. I guess it's my stubborn Dutch background.
