What is happening in Vitez is stark evidence that while international outrage over "ethnic cleansing" has focused on Bosnia's Serbs, they're not the only ones who practice it. "Throughout these mountains," said Williams, "there are sights in the villages that remind you of Lebanon: massive 'ethnic cleansing' according to religion, and bodies in rubble. The first night, after that bomb went off, our men picked up 75 bodies who were executed as they were captured or ran down the streets. I've seen too much of it, too many dead women and children." The brothers then marched into Bank of America and got a $40,000 loan to open their next store on Park Street in Alameda. Mr. Long was born and raised in Covelo in Mendocino County. He graduated from UC-Berkeley in 1932 with a degree in accounting. While at Berkeley, Mr.

Long played trumpet in the Cal Band and served as the president of the band's honor society. He continued to support the band during the next 60-plus years as a member of the Cal Band Endowment Fund Circle of 100. During World War II, Mr. Long served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy at Moffett Field.

Mr. Long was active in health and educational charity work, supporting the Contra Costa County Regional Center for the Arts, the John Muir Medical Center, Heather Farm Garden Center, Las Trapas School and Easter Seals. Jonas Pleskys Soviet defector FIROM EXAMINER STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS OAKLAND Jonas Pleskys, the Soviet submarine captain whose defection during the height of the Cold War became the basis for the novel and movie "The Hunt for Hied October," has died in Oakland. He was 58. Mir. Pleskys apparently died in his sleep about two weeks ago, said a friend, Donantas Januta. Januta found his body April 14 in the Oakland apartment where Mr.

Pleskys lived a alone. He had been dead for several days. While piloting a reconnaissance mission in the Baltic Sea, Mr. Pleskys took his craft and its entire crew to Sweden. He fooled the crew into thinking they were returning home by forcing one crew member at gunpoint to reprogram the navigational instruments.

Once in Sweden, Mr. Pleskys was the only member of the sub to defect. 1-e later said that he had WORLD DATELINES ly 400 Palestinian deportees held a sit-in under Israeli guns in south Lebanon Monday night to protest the resumption of Mideast peace talks Tuesday in Washington. The protest failed to force Israel to make concessions on the deportees, who were expelled last December following the slayings of six Israeli troopers. Israel claimed the deportees were activists in radical Muslim groups such as Hamas that have instigated violence in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

The men have rejected an offer from Israel to take 100 back immediately and allow the rest to return by December. The Palestinians held their sit-in after marching from their camp in the no man's land between Lebanon and Israel Monday to within 385 yards of an Israeli position at Zemraya, defying warning volleys of tank and artillery fire. The alert called for increased vigilance from police, said a spokeswoman. The Times of London said the warning was distributed to police throughout Britain.

The newspaper said top executives in London's financial district were rerouted and that roadblocks were set up to check cars. Despite these measures, the Irish Republican Army drove a dump truck laden with explosives into the center of the financial district Saturday morning. Police spotted it more than an hour before the explosion, but did not attempt 1 to defuse it for fear of booby traps. The bomb killed a news photographer, injured 44 other people and caused as much as $1 billion in damage. 'As Death Notices MALACOS, George J.

PAUL STAR TRIBUNE VITEZ, Bosnia-Hercegovina In Vitez, a mountain town of blooming orchards and lush meadows, the "ethnic cleansing" began this way: After seizing a Muslim family, Croatian soldiers handcuffed the husband 1 to the steering wheel of a gasoline tanker and aimed the truck at the mosque in the center of the town of 5,000 people. To miss the mosque would mean certain execution for the man's wife and children as retribution. Hitting the mosque might be payment enough for their release, although that was doubtful.

Either way, the husband was a dead man the moment the Croatian soldiers released the truck's brake and pushed it down the hill toward the target. "When we found what was left of him, there was only an arm handcuffed to the wheel," said Sgt. Andrew Williams, a British soldier serving with the U.N. peacekeeping force in Bosnia. The destruction of the mosque marked the start of a campaign of Croatian atrocities against their Muslim neighbors that has left more than 300 people dead in Vitez since April 18.

Representatives of U.N. forces in Bosnia say Muslims have been equally guilty of atrocities in other villages. The two nominal anti -Serbian allies 1 have been at each other's throats since Croatia issued a deadline for Muslim troops to vacate areas earmarked for Croatian self-rule under an international peace plan that may never take OBITUARIES Pharmacy chain founder Long dies EXAMINER STAFF REPORT Thomas J. Long, a co-founder of the Walnut Creek-based Longs Drug Stores, a pioneer in self -service retail pharmacy, died Friclay at his home on the outskirts of Walnut Creek. A Longs Drug Stores spokesman said the family declined to comment on the cause of death.

Mr. Long was 82. Mr. Long had retired in 1975 from the company he and his late brother, Joseph M. Long, started at a single outlet in Oakland in 1938 with a $25,000 loan from M.B.

Scaggs, the founder of Safeway Stores and Joseph Long's fatherin-law. From that one outlet, Longs Drug Stores grew to its current 274 stores in five Western states with 15,000 employees and gross sales in excess of $2 billion in its most recent fiscal year. Mr. Long was fond of remarking that he and his brother Joseph, both of whom studied at UCBerkeley during the 1930s, had been repeatedly told by their professors that Depression-ridden America was no place in which to start a business. "We took the risks," Mr.

Long observed in a 1981 interview. "We showed all those pink professors at Cal there was still a lot of opportunity out there." The fact that M.B. Scaggs was willing to bankroll the brothers' self-service drug store idea did, however, give them a certain liquidity edge in the cash-shy late 1930s, although Scaggs insisted that both Longs get some retail experience under their belts before he forked over the $25,000. "Joe went to Safeway. I went to work for L.J.

Scaggs," Mr. Long noted, adding that within a year they opened their first drug store in a building adjacent the Key System electric train station in Oakland on Piedmont Avenue near 40th CROATIA SERBIA BOSNIA Tuzla Srebrenica Vitez Sarajevo Gorazde, GO Area of I detall ALB. backed by fruit orchards and newly seeded gardens. "By the time we get to a village, it is too late," said Lars Baggesen, a Danish observer with the European Community's monitoring mission in Bosnia. "Near Vitez, we found bodies of women and children literally hanging out of the windows of burned-out homes." During the day in Vitez, Croatian soldiers come knocking on doors, rounding up young Croatian men like Darko Rykovich, a 26- year-old technician.

"My neighbors made a list and said, "Tomorrow you go up to the mountains at and all I could do was nod," he said. "I don't have a chance up there. I've only fired a gun in target practice. I've never been a soldier. "To me, we're all the same, but because my parents were born Croatian, everybody says I am a Croat, too.

I don't want to fight, but they say I'm defending my own kind. It's not my fight, but what am I supposed to do? Tell them, 'Time out, I'm a civilian'?" CLUNE, Marguerite G. Red Cross ambulances speed down shell-pocked streets, going to the latest scene of an execution to a back yard full of blooming apple trees with a family strewn beneath the branches, to a basement where a woman and her small child were found with single gunshots to their heads.

Nedzada Haskic counts herself and her two children among the lucky. Ordered out of a village near Vitez, she saw her life go up in flames. "The Croats burned the house and the stables," she said. "Then they lined us up, took our money and clothes and beat on us in front of our children. The younger Croats wanted to use us as a live shield so the Muslim fighters wouldn't shoot them.

But the older Croats saved us. I held my daughter in my arms and my son in front of me, and then we walked. They shot the men who were running." Mr. Pleskys was born in Lithuania in 1935 to a family of farm laborers.

His parents died in 1948 after Russian troops, occupying Lithuania as part of an ethnic political reliability campaign, deported his family to Siberian Gulag camps because they opposed the occupying army, according to Januta, a fellow Lithuanian. Mr. Pleskys and his sisters and brothers escaped in the chaos and remained in what was then the Soviet republic of Lithuania. The military later drafted Mr. Pleskys.

His superiors quickly noticed his talents and nominated him for the Leningrad Soviet Naval Academy. Despite opposition from political officers because of his family background, he won admission, Januta said, noting that the vast size of the Soviet military required a large number of qualified officer candidates. In 1961, at the age of 26, he became the captain of a Soviet submarine. Author Tom Clancy based his book "The Hunt for Red October" on Pleskys' defection. The book was later made into a movie.

Benny Newton, a black minister who defied a black mob in last spring's riots to save a stranger's life, has died of leukemia.

He was 60. The minister died Saturday at the Veterans Administration hospital in the city's Westwood section after a 5-week battle, said his sister, Deborah Dyas. Rev. Newton, pastor of Light of Love Outreach, was watching live news broadcasts of rioting that erupted last April 29 following state acquittals of the four white officers in the beating of black motorist Rodney King. He rushed to the riot's flash point at an intersection in the South Central district.

There, he threw himself over bleeding, battered Fidel Lopez, who had been dragged out of his truck, kicked, beaten, stripped and sprayed with paint by a mob. ROME Central bank governor Carlo Azeglio Ciampi was selected Monday form a new Italian government guaranteeing economic stability as the nation tries to cope with a massive corruption scandal. Ciampi, 72, a political neutral, is expected to pick a cabinet of technocrats in an attempt to reassure financial markets the government will respond to the Tangentopoli scandal. Ciampi replaces Socialist Prime Minister Giuliano Amato, who was forced to resign last week. In a related development, a Senate committee voted Tuesday to recommend lifting former Prime Minister Giuliano Andretti's parliamentary immunity so prosecutors can go ahead with their probe of his suspected dealings with the Mafia.

The full Senate will vote on the recommendation May 6. Three Mafia turncoats in the last few weeks have told prosecutors in Sicily that Andreotti met with top mob bosses. Andreotti has vehemently denied the charges. Germany to pay war reparations to Czechs BONN Czech President Vaclav Havel said Monday that Germany planned to pay its first reparations to victims of Nazi tyranny living in his country. Adolf Hitler's troops invaded Czechoslovakia in 1938.

The Nazis interned hundreds of thousands of people there during World War II. Czechoslovakia has split into two countries. Havel did not say whether reparations were also being worked out with Slovakia. Germany announced this month it was setting up foundations in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus to pay $625 million to Nazi victims. Germany has a similar arrangement with Poland.
