BOMBING IN ST. LOUIS: A disc jockey at a St Louis rock station who two weeks ago broadcast a fake report of a nuclear attack has been fired as the Cardinals' public address announcer. John Ulett said he was told he will not be retained for the 1991 season, ending an eight-year stint with the baseball team.

Ulett, who works for FM radio station KSHE, broadcast a fake report Jan. 29 that the United States was under nuclear attack. The report was made after several listeners suggested the U.S. use nuclear weapons on Iraq, Ulett said, adding he broadcast the fake warning to make people think about the horrors of nuclear war. KSHE suspended Ulett for a week and the incident is being investigated by the Federal Communications Commission.

SHOT IN THE ARM: Fans under the age of 35 at Yale's basketball game Friday against Pennsylvania needed more than a ticket they needed proof theyVe been immunized against measles. Four Perm wrestlers have contracted measles and Yale is taking the precautionary measure to ensure the virus is not spread. "We will do all in our power to assure those in attendance that we have eliminated the risk of contracting the virus at the gym," Barbara Chester, Yale's associate director of athletics, said before the game. People between the ages of 13 and 34 needed written evidence of a second immunization. Yale students were checked against a master immunization list.

They approve of the team's new helmet logo about as much as they like the Rams. In an Examiner poll, readers asked "Should the 49ers change their helmet logo?" phoned in 7,392 no votes and 583 yes votes. Put another way, they voted roughly 13-1 against the change announced by the 49ers four day3 ago. It was the largest response to an Examiner sports poll since one ad dressing the Joe Montana-Steve Young quarterback controversy in January 1988 drew more than 16,000 votes (the majority backine Montana as the starter bv more than 3-1).

And 49ers fans throughout Northern California apparently feel similarly about the break in tradition. The San Jose Mercury News and Sacramento Bee also re ported a vast majority of respondents voting thumbs down to the 49ers logo in script, which is repla cing the interlocking block SF that graced Niners helmets since 1962. In announcing the new-look helmet, 49ere owner Eddie DeBartolo said, "We wanted to modernize logo." But clearly 49ers followers dont such changes lightly, and their voices may be heard as far away as Youngstown, Ohio. Not really. But Harding, who had missed it in four other competitions, was perfect on it. The 20-year-old from Portland wasn't through, either. She hit seven triples altogether, including a triple toe loop-triple toe loop combination. Harding also showed a marked improvement in style over previous years, and the judges noticed.

She received one perfect 6.0 for technical merit, the first woman in the U.S. championships in 18 years to do so. The rest of her marks, mostly 5.9s, gave her first place with seven of nine judges. The victory capped a comeback for Harding. She was third in the 1989 nationals only two Americans went to the world championships that year then fell to seventh last year.

UNDER THE GUN: Following St. Petersburg police's lead, three more law enforcement agencies in the Tampa Bay area have shelved their traffic radar units amid concern over a possible link to ic describing her magnificent free skate Saturday, which included the first triple axel by an American woman in competition. With it, Harding soared to the U.S. Figure Skating championship.

"After that, I knew it would be so easy to get through the rest of the program," Harding said. "Knowing I was the first woman in the United States to do it is overwhelming." The favorite, Kristi Yamaguchi of Fremont, was second, followed by Nancy Kerrigan. They will represent the United States at next month's world championships in Munich. It will be the first worlds for Harding and Kerrigan of Stoneham, and third for Yamaguchi. While Harding was soaring, Ya-maguchi's performance was relatively flat.

She fell on a triple sal-chow and, although she hit some other difficult jumps, her skating seemed uninspired. She finished second for the third straight year. "My first goal was to make the world team again," said the 19-year-old Californian. "I went out there and performed almost as well as I can skate, except that one mistake." Yamaguchi did finish first with one judge. Harding was superb from beginning to end.

But the highlight was the triple axel, which only Midori Ito of Japan has hit in competition. It came 45 seconds into the routine and provoked a massive roar from the crowd of 10,346 and a huge grin 3 If vou're crav about haslet.
