MM' REGISTER-STAR-NEWS Monday, 18, 1952 VVesfern States- ing Voyage EDITOR'S lowing story relating: to the Western States, was contilbuted by W. O. Stublg. Siuadtilky. C.

who was an the Cedar Point 45teamer6r. A. BoeckUpg during the 4951 seasoh, furnishes the data for "the foliejying tale. Blanchard has lakes for many years, visually- in the department of engines and" boilers, and in 1920 or fthereabqtits was an oiler on the Steamer. Western States.

The ship at that; was on the Detroit- Buffalotfun. The wind had been in the 'gale force, some 24 hours ind a sizeable sea had kicked up even before the ship left Detroit on her Buffalo voyage. The wind increased in force as the ahip proceeded and in the vicinity Of the water around Long Point, is some 25 miles from Buffalo; the engine crew noticed a racing of the engines as large waves bow and stern of the ship caused the water to fall away from the paddles and the wheels, lacking the resistance of the water and meetiSg'. only air, would momentarily, spin, necessitating a throt- tSngiof the engine. It Js a common occurrence for propeller wheels spinning, as when the screw wheel ship takes a dive over the top of a big wave her bow going down and stern coming up, exposing the propellers, engineers close the throttle momentarily, otherwise the ship's engines could be shaken to pieces.

A mas- five engine is not intended for high -speed motion, as large bodies move slowly. The wind showed no sign of abating and as the ship neared the entrance to Buffalo Breakwater Harbor Mouth, the captain suddenly lost his nerve, the moment had come for a decision, either run into the harbor or turn about and run back. The ship yawed wildly from port to unmanageable as most ships are under conditions of a big sea and following gale, the swung three points to either aide of her course; three points to port, three points to starboard. The Harbor entrance is 300 feet Wide but the vicious turmoil en circling his ship caused the skipper at the last moment to turn about, 8he might not steer as he expected; aide wheelers have what is known as a slow rudder, a collision with the colossal concrete wall of the Buffalo breakwater meant loss of ship and probably everybody board. He issued an order of "Hard-a- Port" to the steersman and the ship 's bow rapidly fell away from the breakwater, into a rounding-up maneuver.

As the ship presented a broadside to the enormous waves, one gigantic wave boarded her with a force and volume that ripped out six staterooms and set her entire promenade deck awash. However, she completed her roundup and with the bow facing the gale she rode easier. She ran back and anchored in the lee of Long point. Her skipper was subsequently fired, the owners evidently figured the ship could have made the entrance through the breakwater, thereby avoiding the damage to its staterooms. Is Related on STEAMER WESTERN STATES Death in the By Doris Hudson Moss ffetritwM ty MCA fcj Wtsnn family ffolldwing, walked across the meadow to the barn.

The James car was there as were the several other motors of the others at the lodge. The horses that the officers and the sheriff had ridden were in' their stalls, comfortably nibbling hay. A fourth horse was mud-splashed, and showed every sign of having been hard-ridden. I saw that Duncan looked at him closely and measured the length of the stirrup strap of a saddle on the floor. But my car was gone! "You wouldn't kid me, would you?" Duncan inquired a bit Sarcastically as he watched me closely in the unmerciful light of the new day.

"No, I Wouldn't. The fact is, I was let in for something when I came to this horrible place. I want to-get out!" Because it had been such a bad night and because I seemed hedged about with damaging evidence of which I was innocent and knew nothing, I burst into hysterical weeping. And in between the sobs that relieved my nerves my body, I told Sergeant Duncan the story of the treasure. He listened quietly and gave me 'his very clean handkerchief with which to mop up my hysterics.

When I again had myself in hand, he said to me in a matter of-fact tone as he watched me closely to see the effect of his words, "Sure you didn't murder your own sister?" I gasped, "I have no sister!" A queen bee sometimes lays as much as her own weight in eggs during a single day. THE STORY: Rosemary Curtis finds murder instead of vacation relaxation in the Sierras. Mrs. Ordell, wife of a college professor, has been stabbed, then her body mysteriously disappears. In talking to Professor Ordell, Rosemary learns that on the ridge just above the vacation resort lies hidden some money left behind by immigrants.

So far it has never been unearthed. VII Professor Ordell went ahead of me and I followed him by the dancing light of his flashlight. Dr. Roberts came last. Just as we rounded a curve in the trail that circled a clump of pines that light failed.

The bat tery was burned out. We were about to stumble along when Sue growled and strained on the leash. There was a rustle in a clump of willows to our left. There was the snapping of a stick, as if a foot had trod upon it. Without the light we were helpless to see our way; yet we began to run, stumbling over roots and rocks.

The Professor ran into the brush foolishly toward the noise. I started to race madly toward the lodge. Then Sue frightened me again by breaking into loud barks. Almost at once we heard the command, "Halt!" and to my utter joy and relief I saw the familiar and reassuring uniform of a state policeman. He ushered me into the lodge door.

I told him of our fright on the trail. Calling another officer, he sent indoors. Then two of the officers went out to search. The big room was bright with the light from fire, candles, and lamps. Everyone seemed more cheerful and apparently doubtful for the protection of the law.

"Duke Torrington, the sheriff of the county, was there. He was a spare, tall man, with eyes close together for all the world like a mule. Murder, one could see, was a bit out of his line. Es pecially a murder in which the corpse was missing. After the officers returned, not even having found the Professor or Dr.

Roberts, I told my story of Mrs. Ordell's disappearance When they returned the officers wrote endlessly in little notebooks, asked unceasing and apparently futile questions and noted all answers in writing. Their questions came to no point. Oddly enough, and as if by a pre-arranged plan, no one mentioned the story of the buried treasure, of Elsie Martinson, or that apparently all the persons at Gold Lake were there for a single purpose. There was, indeed, a mystery within a mystery.

And it seemed, must either stay and play a dangerous and ungracious part in the story or take my life in my hands by driving a skidding car over impassible roads perhaps into the dark lake that lay below the cliffs. Professor Ordell returned after a half-hour and announced that he followed the echoes of footsteps to the lake but had caught no one. I slipped into my coat and gloves and, approaching the sher iff, I said, "I have decided that shall go on to Tahoe The sheriff grinned as he continued to pick his teeth caressingly with a splinter of wood. "Well, Sis, nobody's leavin' here. Least of all, you.

Why, it's you that we want mostly." Most everyone slept a little as the night wore on. About dawn the sheriff awakened and went to the kitchen with Rhumba, Dick, and Jeff to prepare breakfast. Sergeant Duncan left his at the door and went outside to stand by the window that had been shattered by the bullet, followed him. He looked for tracks or evidence but the beating rain had melted the large, broad tracks we had seen yesterday. The faint light of the new day served to give me back my lost courage.

So as boldly as possible I looked into Sergeant Duncan's Irish blue eyes and said, "Sergeant, is it true that there was a murder down the mountain at Horseshoe Springs?" "There was." I told him how I knew of it and of the bullet hole in my fender. He asked to see the latter.
