B2 GETTYSBURG TIMES, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY29, FASTBREAKS and wire Frazier in Lincoln hospital LINCOLN, Neb Former Nebraska quarterback Tommie Frazier, who led the Cornhuskers to a national championship at the Fiesta Bowl last month, is in the hospital. Suzanne McMasters, spokeswoman ut Bryan Memorial Hospital, confirmed Wednesday that Frazier had been admitted but would not disclose details. Officials at Bryan on Monday had denied that Frazier was hospitalized there. The Omaha World-Herald quoted Frazier's mother, Priscilla Frazier. as saying her 3on was undergoing tests to determine If another blood clot had formed in his right leg.

Frazier ii.s admitted to Bryan on Monday for a sinus infection that worsened dunng a weekend autograph session in Norfolk, Mrs. Frazier said. She called the hospitalization was a precaution "He almost passed out," she told the World-Herald. They to make sure it didn't turn into pneumonia Frazier, the runnerup to Ohio State's Eddie George in last year's Hnsman Trophy voting, had blood-clot problems during his junior season. Anticoagulant medication dissolved a riot behind his right knee but the clot later reformed.

Frazier missed seven games, but returned to play the 1995 Orange Bowl and lead Nebraska to the first of two consecutive national titles Professional scouts have projected Frazier as a defensive back, but he has said he wants to play is a quarterback. The Associated Press attempted to reach Mrs. Frazier at her home in Palmetto, and Dr. Deepak Gangahar, the Lincoln surgeon who operated on Fiazier's leg in 1994 Calls were not immediately returned. Nor was Hukeem Olajuwon, who said ait line problems were the reason he failed to attend REFS BOYCOTTING TOURNEY WILMINGTON, Del Black varsity basketball officials who referee games in New Castle County are boycotting this year's state tournaments because they say they have been historically barred from officiating late-round games. The referees say the problem lies the selection process The referees aie members of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials Board No 11, which represents leferees in New Castle County and Cecil County, Md. About 10 referees are participating in the boycott The board uses a merit system to determine which referees officiate major games The referees arp ranked annually by votes from coaches and referees, with each group receiving equal weight The black officials allege they receive far fewer votes from their peers than from coaches, which reduces their overall ranking "They don't vote on ability. They vote on some other criteria," saul Donald Patton, a referee for 14 years.

"There is no objectivity when it comes to black officials on the board The boycotting referees have proposed a rotation system that would ensure a cross-section of representation for all games Such a rotation system was also recommended last year by a committee of the Delaware Secondary School Athletic Association Bob Depcw, DSSAA executive director, said the recommendations may be considered this spring Meanwhile, Paul Reynolds, president of the basketball officials board, said replacement referees will be chosen from the remaining list of those available for the tournament. Cardinals sign Lomas Brown Read Sports BY MEL REISNER Associated Press TEMPE, Ariz Lomas Brown, a Pro Bowl selection in each of the last six seasons with the Detroit Lions, will be counted on to help solve the Arizona Cardinals' pass- protection problem.

Installing Brown at the key left tackle position appears is a major move in new coach Vince Tobin's rebuilding plan. The Cardinals gave up a league-high 55 sacks, including 53 of Dave Kneg, who threw 21 interceptions, also the worst in the NFL. "You need a top-quality left tackle, because that's the blind side of the quarterback," Tobin said Wednesday. "You pay a lot of money lo quarterbacks, and if they get hit on the blind side they could be out of there pretty quick. "Obviously, if you get a good lineman, you can do some things to help other lineman, so I think it really solidified our offense." Brown received a three-year, $9 million contract calling for a $3 million signing bonus and an average annual salary of $2 million.

Brown, 32, an unrestricted free agent after 11 years with the Lions, was making preparations to travel to Arizona and could not be reached for comment. But he told Phoenix radio station KGME that Tobin was making the right moves. "He's going to turn this program around," Brown said. "I think there are some strides we can make this year, and hopefully well keep striding, and the organization can get to where they want to be, because they're making the commitment." When he was hired Feb. 7, Tobin made keeping free agents Eric Swann and Aeneas Williams for the defense and signing an offensive left tackle his top priorities.

Swann, a tackle, was designated as the franchise player, and the Cardinals re-signed Williams, a cornerback, a five-year, $17 million deal on Monday. The Cardinals' offense was 24th in the NFL last season, producing touchdowns in just 1) of 16 games. Most if that was tied to instability along the offensive line, where left guard Duval Love was the only player to start every game SPORTSMEN SPEAKOUT "What is your favorite trout fly, bnit or lure?
