Gilbertson didn't find out until the next day, when he met with Klein alone. Cal's offense isn't going to do anything differently to compensate for the loss of Klein, said Gilbert-son: "It doesn't us a lot of good, trying to reinvent the wheel." Klein said not getting a second 1 chance in the USC game "was the culmination. That showed me that, obviously, this is the way it's going to be.

It showed they had no faith in me at all." Klein said he was told on Sunday the quarterback spot was up for grabs again, "But I think they should have done more than that. They gave Dave his opportunity. I proved I can play. I needed more than, 'It's an open "I think I'm the better quarterback. For the Bears, his move was just one more piece of grief, "My first thought was like, 'God, another said defensive lineman Chidi Ahanotu. "Now our backups are a walk-on and a true freshman. You look at it for what it is, and it's a major blow." But the Bears can't afford to feel sorry for themselves, Ahanotu said. "We've got a lot of other problems. If we were cruising along, this might be a big deal.

But we've got to get ourselves technically sound on the field. We cant dwell on this." Offensive lineman Todd Steus-sie said, "There's a little more sense of urgency to protecting Dave (Barr) we don't have Perry backing him anymore. But the No. 1 priority is to redeem ourselves on Saturday against Arizona." Cal's backup quarterbacks are now redshirt freshman Kerry McGonigle, a walk-on from Oregon's Hood River High, and freshman Ziv Gottlieb. McGonigle has six snaps to his credit, all against San Jose State.

Gottlieb has none. Indeed, Barkley had his way down low Wednesday, stepping to the line 12 times and making 11 free throws, and is now 18-for-23 in his two exhibition games as a Sun. Phoenix as a team has attempted 101 foul shots in the two games, and it won this one from the stripe, 42-26. Barkley led all scorers day with 25 points in 24 minutes, teammate Kevin Johnson adding 24 on the night his Cal No.

The 6-9 Hill, who will continue to log minutes at center as well as forward, seems resigned to the role, although it means hell spend a lot of time defending against larger players. "I guess I'm going to keep playing that position until we get a center or until we win a championship," he said. "Hey, it doesn't bother me.

I'm starting to feel more comfortable there." And Nelson is feeling comfortable having him there. "This is a very big year for Tyrone," he said. "Lord knows we've had our ups and downs, and his growth hasn't been as consistent as we had hoped, and yet there has been growth every year. And he did come back and work very hard this summer." Hill worked hard on the basketball part of his job rather than the conditioning part, which was the focus of his offseason in the summer of 91. When Nelson speaks of Hill's growth, he means the growth of his game, understanding and accepting his role, learning to keep his cool on the court "This is my third year, and I guess it comes from experience," Hill said.

"I owed it to my teammates to stay mentally ready," Barr, the starter all season, said he expects to spend Dave Barr more time with McGonigle on game plans, but otherwise does not feel Klein's absence. "Nothing has changed except that there's a different name," he said.

Mike Caldwell, who came to Cal at the same time as Klein, said Klein's move caught the team by surprise: "They were calling him 'Mr. Transfer when he got here, but you'd think if he was going to transfer he would've done it a long time ago." The 3-3 Bears are coming off a loss to USC, a game in which Klein got only one snap. He went in in the second quarter with a draw play called, audibled a pass, then fumbled when hit at Cal's 12-yard line. The Trojans cashed it in for a field goal and went on to win, 27-24. Klein didn't play any more in that game.

Still angry over that the TV show "Hangin With Mr. Cooper." "He played tough basketball, and that was fine." And there was an unusual tossing of T-shirts into the stands before tip-off. Not Barkley's T-shirts, however. When a young woman holding an armful of "Kevin Johnson Tribute" shirts walked near the Suns bench, Barkley grabbed the entire stock and heaved them into the crowd, at first one by one, then maybe a half dozen at once. When asked to pay, Barkley, smiling, gave the lady a hug and jogged onto the court.

That left new Suns coach Paul Westphal as the fall guy. "It cost me $120," said Westphal. "I didn't even get a discount." In Barkley, however, Westphal's got a great force. "He is mentally tough, a hard worker and very intense," said Suns forward Dan Ma-jerle. "And he keeps us entertained." In the Olympics, Barkley got a technical against overmatched Ango Charles Barkley la for jabbing an elbow and subsequently got criticism from the media.

"I had a great time over there for the most part," said Barkley. "It was just the American press that bothered me. "They're a bunch of jealous people who never let the truth stand in the way of a good story. "I went to Spain and accomplished what I wanted, which was to win a gold medal. Toronto, KCBS (740) 5:15 p.m. Olympic boxer Griffin's debut is a success EXAMINER NEWS SERVICES ITTLE Eric Griffin proved to be a big puncher in his pro debut. Griffin, controversial loser to a computer scoring system in the Olympics, left nothing to chance in his first paid appearance Wednesday in a dominating performance against outclassed Sebastian Lopez in Las Vegas. The 108-pound four-time world amateur champion beat and battered Lopez at will before the scheduled four-round bout was stopped at the end of the second round. "It's a relief," Griffin said of his pro debut.

"I've been learning a whole lot about being a pro. Now I can move on and keep my record going." Griffin was unable to knock down Lopez, who stood about the same height as 4-foot-10 Rafael Lozano, the squat Spaniard who took the controversial 6-5 decision over Griffin in the Olympics. In another bout on the same card, Frank Liles stopped Merqui Sosa in the 12th and final round to win the vacant NABF super middleweight title. Liles, 167 pounds, upped his record to 22-1 with 15 knockouts. Sosa, 165, dropped to 21-3-1.

Ricky Meyers overcame profuse bleeding from above his right eye to outpoint Livingstone Bramble in a 10-round junior welterweight bout at Atlantic City. TENNIS Pete Sampras made his return to Lyon, France, a winning one as he beat Jeff Tarango, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, in the first round of the Lyon Open. Last December, Sampras lost both of his singles matches in the Davis Cup final against France. Sampras won this tournament last year and is top seeded but is known more for his defeats that gave the French team it first Davis Cup title in 59 years. "I don't feel like talking right now," he said. In two exhibition games, Gat ling has shot 3-for-9 from the floor and has totaled 14 points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes. Alexander has shot 3-for-14 and totaled 14 points, 10 rebounds and 11 fouls in 29 minutes. Owens is 7-for-21 with 23 points, 20 rebounds and seven turnovers in 52 minutes. Hill, in 43 minutes, has 22 points, 15 rebounds, four blocked shots and just one turnover and has shot ll-for-19.

Fouls continue to plague him he has nine but Nelson attributes that partly to a new rule enforcement that has been in effect in the preseason. Currently, referees are hot allowing a defensive player to put a hand or body on an opponent who doesn't have the ball, or use his legs to move said opponent out of the paint. If you know the Warriors' personnel, you know this will give almost any opposing team an advantage. "The dominant players like (Charles) Barkley and (Karl) Ma-lone have an even bigger advantage than they did," Nelson said. "We're struggling a little bit with that.

"I can't believe it's going to con- tinue into the regular season, but I don't know. That got us in foul trouble and kept us there, and it made what was a good basketball game into a bad one.
