SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER Metallica, Journey lead balloting as ceremony returns to Bffl Graham Civic Auditorium By Philip Elwood 1A A0) a 7 JLM -Michael Medved, New York Post EXAMINER MUSKCnrilC THE BAY AREA Music Awards Foundation on Thursday announced the nominees for BAM magazine's Bay Area Music Awards the Bam-mies which will be presented March 15 at ceremonies in the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. "It is particularly fortuitous," said Bammies 20 executive producer Dennis Erokan at Eleven Restaurant, site of the nominations announcement, "that the Bammies 20th anniversary celebration should be held, after two years away, in the completely refurbished Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, our traditional home." Leading the Bammie balloting this year are Metallica (and its members) with nominations in seven categories; Journey with five; and Cake, Chris Isaak Silver-tone, and Imperial Teen with four each. The Tommy Castro Band, Counting Crows, Tracy Chapman, Dave Ellis, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Charlie Hunter Quartet and Sunshine Club each had three nominations. This year's Bammie ballot has three new categories covering the areas of dance artist, hip hop artist and artist. The urban contemporary album category has been dropped.

Every year in October, Eroken, who is also BAM's editor in chief, solicits nominations for Bammie awards from 150 Bay Area music critics, radio programmers, recording industry personnel and other members of the music community. According to Erokan, "Nominations are based on artistic accomplishments," adding, "the nominees must have been active on the Bay Area scene and have had a recording issued during the period from Nov. 1, 1995, to Oct. 31, 1996." Bammie voting is by mail using ballots printed in five consecutive issues of the free biweekly BAM magazine, beginning with the Nov. 29 edition.
