With that background, Jensen is especially appreciative that Serra has produced nine players who have reached the majors, beginning with Fregosi and continuing through Tim Cullen, Danny Frisel-la, Norm Angelini, Randy Gomez, Scott Chiamparino (currently on San Diego's disabled list), Bonds, Jefferies and Joe Kmak. "If there's ever a guy I'd like to Bee succeed, it's Joe Kmak," said Jensen, who seems to like talking baseball almost as much as he did playing. "Now there's the ultimate over-achiever, just about the hardest worker I've ever seen, and a great guy, too." Kmak, a 1981 Serra graduate, spent eight years in the minor leagues before getting a chance to play in 51 games with the Milwaukee Brewers last season before returning to Triple-A ball. This season he's with Tidewater, the New York Mets' Triple-A team.

As much as Jensen appreciates the overwhelming talent of the likes of Bonds and Jefferies, he knows that the effort of the Kmaks can teach his kids even more. "Baseball is big at Serra. It's real See SERRA, P-13) phia, hail from the San Mateo high school. But much more telling is that Fregosi, a 52-year-old Serra athletic legend; Bonds, a 30-year-old seemingly headed for the Hall of Fame; and Jefferies, 27, don't even represent a Golden Age of Serra baseball. In fact, if anything, that talented trio is ancient history to the players who do represent such a gilded period the kids of the 908.

Despite fierce competition for talent from strong programs at rivals St. Francis and Carlmont, among many others, Serra has won three of the past four Central Coast Section Division I championships during a period of increasing CCS diamond domination by San Mateo County players. Jensen, returning to Serra after two seasons as head coach at College of San Mateo, was enthralled to see freshman coach Tom Mona-han and assistant coach Rich Jefferies lead the Padres to their past two titles. The Serra community, of course, was especially excited Tuesday night during the All-Star festivities. But what, if anything, Bonds, Fregosi, Jefferies hail from San Mateo school but watch for the new kids By Michelle Nolan SPECIAL TO WE EXAMINER SAN MATEO Pete Jensen loves to steal a one-liner from Jim Fregosi when he talks about what Gregg Jefferies has meant to Serra High's baseball program.

"When Gregg walked into the locker room at the major league All-Star Game last year, the first thing Fregosi said to him was, 'Well, how does it feel to be the third-best player from Serra?" Aside from being an example of Fregosi's dry wit, that quip also says a lot about Serra's baseball tradition. A lot, but not all. Jensen, as well as anyone, appreciates the fact that two 1994 National League All-Star starters, Jefferies of St. Louis and Barry Bonds of San Francisco, as well as the manager, Fregosi of Philadel EXAMINER FLE PHOTOS Barry Bonds, now a San Francisco Giants slugger, in 1982 when he was a star of the Serra High School Padres. At right, Serra shortstop Jim Fregosi (holding baseball), with friend Bud Grand-saert, talks about signing with the Boston Red Sox for a bonus contract in 1959.

do the likes of Bonds and the younger Jefferies mean to the current kids at Serra? "It's mostly the younger kids who come in who are impressed," Jensen said. "No question, they identify with them (as Serra graduates). But Gregg works out so much in the off-season here, that to the varsity players he's basically just Gregg. Barry is more of a mystery for all the kids." Fregosi rivals pro football Hall of Famer Lynn Swann as the best athlete in Serra history, but few of today's youngsters know the former four-sport star as anything other than a mildly collectible old baseball card. 29 IHra' agtebt asVeWi Jefferies, with his .342 average last season and .330 mark this year, may well surpass Fregosi, a former American League All-Star shortstop who batted .265 with 1,726 hits and 151 home runs in an 18-season career from 1961-78.

"A lot of people think I coached Barry, but I didn't," Jensen said. Bonds graduated in 1982; Jensen took the varsity in 1984, when Jefferies was a junior, after a decade of coaching the lower-level teams. Did Jensen think Jefferies was certain to become a major leaguer? "Absolutely," Jensen said. "I've had two players I felt were certain major leaguers Gregg and Danny Serafmi (the record-breaking lefthander who graduated in 1992 and is pitching in the Minnesota Twins organization)." Jensen has spent 30 years playing and coaching with and against the best San Mateo County has had to offer.
