On the two voyages this year, the USGS started mapping "acouB-tical images" on the seabed. It used a technique called "Bidescan sonar" to sweep the ocean floor in half-mile-wide swathes of sound as a way of locating "non-geologic objects." They showed on the maps as dots.

Then, underwater video cameras confirmed that the dots were the barrels for which the scientists had been hunting. In dramatic shots, the camera recorded fish swimming among corroded and burst drums, confirming environmentalists' fears that marine creatures are feeding on plants and animals contaminated by the radiation. USGS marine geologist Herman Karl, who heads the mapping project, compares the project with the great land mass surveys done by the USGS in the 1860s and 1870s. "It's equivalent to mapping our frontier, the American Western territories," he said. "There's been a lot known from other research scientists, but this is the first tematic survey of large areas of the ocean floor." N-waste litters Farallones multibillion-dollar cleanup program for the nation's worst toxic-waste sites.

The issue heated up in May when the NOAA issued a report warning that the sanctuary site remained virtually unstudied for contamination, despite the government's acknowledging the nuclear dumping 20 years ago. The publication of this internal NOAA document by The Examiner spurred Reps. Barbara Boxer, D-Greenbrae, and Douglas Bosco, D-Sebastopol, to seek $1 million for an investigation. This month, Congress appropriated $900,000 to find out whether the radionuclides once contained in the drums have tainted the sea creatures. In a related development, the USGS decided to study the coast from Point Reyes to Pillar Point as part of a national program to learn more about offshore waters, which along Northern California have economic value as fisheries, recreation sites and dump locations for uivci i.

San Francisco raraliprf Police arrest man who occasionally helped out at shop EXAMINER STAFF REPORT Two motorcycle mechanics were shot and killed Saturday as they worked on bikes at the Frisco Cycle Center on Third Street near Army Street in San Francisco, police said. Plenums, 26, also of San Francisco, in connection with the slayinp, but said they did not know the A department spokesman said the suspect spent a lot of time at the shop, occasionally helping out.

I was just talking to the guy yester-. day. It's weird how people just come and go."
