Greenbelt Baptist Church, which holds services in the Henry Munro public school, on Render Avenue, in. Beacon Hill North, has grown to over 50 families after beginning with a handful of people 10 years ago. Rev. Cal Spence was the church's first pastor but has since been succeeded by Re.

Donald Akitt, who was a Greenbelt church elder and long-time church member before entering the full-time ministry. Atkitt earned his doctoral degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois and taught before coming' to Ottawa to work at the National Research Council. He and his wife and three children joined Greenbelt and became active members. The church has tried to meet the needs of people within the congregation and in the surrounding community in a variety of ways over the years. It now has a strong Pioneer Girls Group for young girls and has begun working toward similar groups for boys.

"One of the ways of meeting the needs of people is through a strong, small group focus in the church," says Atkitt. Members of the church meet in regular Wednesday night Bible study groups in homes where they share concerns and needs. The trio are among an estimated 40 former Catholic priests in the Edmonton area. All three married, although each adds that is not the reason he left. Special speaker for both services will be Rev. John B. Corston. The church is celebrating its 1 58th anniversary and earlier this week held a congregational dinner to help mark the occasion. Tomorrow's morning service will begin at 11 a.m.

and the evening ecumenical service is scheduled for 7:30. Local ministers and priests have been invited to attend the evening service. The minister of St. Paul's is Rev. Frank B.

Stiles. to rent a small house in the countryside. After he left, the Oblates gave him $1,000, and after a time, another $1,000. Klug was a diocesan priest who got his room, board, car maintenance and a small salary as long as he was in good standing with the archdiocese. When he left, the church gave him ho help.

"The only thing I felt really hurt about was that there wasn't a system of really helping guys," Klug says. the happiest in my life." He was program director and retreat master at Star of the North Retreat House in St. Albert, just north of Edmonton, when he left in 1970. "I felt by leaving the organized church I could be more faithful to my original commitment to the Gospels," he says. Now he has a small farm and teaches French-immersion courses to the Canadian Forces.

Morin admits the decision to leave was not an easy one. Most ex-priests, at some point, have been cold-shouldered by priests who were friends or colleagues, and by lay Catholics as well. Then there are more tangible problems when they first left the priesthood, they had no jobs and no money. Morin was' an Oblate priest who had taken a vow of poverty; his order provided for him. He says shortly before he took leave or absence to "think things out," he turned over to the Oblate order, about $2,000 he received from an insurance policy.

Klug left because of "acute loneliness and a sense of isolation," not because of any quarrel with the church. Most priests live alone in parishes, he says. "Because of the lack of interpersonal intimacy and I don't mean sexual intimacy, but the kind you find in a family or a community of priests I found my own self deteriorating." Now a psychologist, Klug is director of patient counselling services at the Misericor-dia Hospital and teaches at Newman Theological College. Dobbin, a priest for 15 years, says his reasons for leaving were more of a political na ed indefinitely in 1972. Parish priest at We-taskiwin, about 100 kilometres south of Edmonton, Dobbin had officiated at a private mass where a former priest and his Catholic, previously divorced wife received communion.

After trying for more than a year to have suspension lifted, Dobbin left the church in 1973. Now a partner in Husky Realty Dobbin says the church is legalistic and merciless toward its own personnel. Morin, on the other hand, looks back on his 10 years with the priesthood as "some of Rev. John Corston Guest speaker married is simplistic," says Klug, who was a priest for 17 years. All three say the decision was painful, reached only after months and sometimes years of prayer and thought.
