In fact, "there's a lot of negotiation between parents and kids" that determines who will be the victor in the big wrestling match at the checkout counter, Mottern says.

"You want them to drink milk they want to drink Coke," Mottern says. "In between are products that are acceptable to both parents and kids." Mottern says Capri Sun may now spin off products with its brand names, and is considering marketing 100 percent juice products, but to date his firm has aggressively been able to "compete with the Big Boys" in the kids' market and he can thank the lit-. tie people for that lot TVt IS 41 Mt mitKkTHfnmlt I Market soars 51 points economy. The company has grabbed kids' attention by offering videos, toys or re-' lated marketing tie-ins that hold children's interest and help them to develop loyalty to the brand name of the product. And the rest, they say, has been up to kids themselves. "Word of mouth and peer pres- sure has been a big factor in our product and the success of our says Chris Mottern, chief executive officer for Capri Sun. "With kids, there's an association factor They see a product in school, and they want it" "Word of mouth is definitely something that happens, and when it does, marketers are often oblivious as to why why things become hot items," says Irma Zandl, who runs the New York-based Xtreme, a company specializing in youth marketing trends. "Oftentimes, it's the fact that something is not being foisted at them (with big ad campaign's).

They're making their own choices that's the essence of it." Zandl says her studies show kids from 10 to 12 are most involved with beverage products, and very knowledgeable about brand names in the category, whether they be Ocean Spray, Slice and Diet Pepsi. But the ultimate success of a hot product through word-of-mouth or such 'lunch box advertising" may depend heavily on the look and perceived "coolness" of a product, experts say. In Capri Sun's case, the company officials paid attention to those details, particularly in packaging. "The pouch is cool literally even on a hot day," says Mottern. "It's got a high sheen.

It's not square. It looks like more of a kid thing. Kids generally dont see their parents using it, so they know it's theirs." But no company can afford to ignore adult consumers either, says Mottern. Capri Sun has purposefully designed its juice pouches with images of surfers, skateboarders and jungle characters and named flavors, like Safari Punch, with kids in mind. But the boxes stress the fruit juices are 100 percent natural, and that message is aimed strictly at grown-ups, Mottern says.
