Microwave oven danger 'exaggerated' WASHINGTON (AP) While admitting that certain mechanical factors of microwave ovens could be improved, the federal Food and Drug Administration said Thursday the magazine Consumer Reports exaggerated the dangers to human health.

"I was very disappointed by the position taken by Consumers Union," said John Villforth, director of the FDA's bureau of radiological health. He was questioned at a Senate commerce committee hearing on proposed legislation to tighten controls on the use of radi ation devices. Consumers Union, a non-profit testing organization, warned the public. Wednesday against buying any model of microwave oven. In an article published in its magazine, Consumer Reports, the testers said all IS models of microwave ovens on the market leak radiation.

The report said some ovens substantially increased radi ation leakage as they age. "Certain aspects of the oven design could be improved," said Deaths ALLAN, Evie Joan In hospital, after a lengthy illness, Wednesday, March 7, 1973, Evie Joan Frankland, age 42 years, beloved wife of R. Meanwhile, a New York eye doctor, -testifying against use of microwave ovens, told a Senate investigating committee in Washington today it is impossible to set safe exposure standards for laser-radiation ap pliances.

Dr. Milton Zaret, an op- thalmologist, said that eye cata racts or other physical problems could' crop up years later even in instances of low-radiation exposure. "The microwave-oven leakage standard set by the Bureau of Radiological Health is about a billion times higher than the to tal entire microwave spectrum given off by the sun," Zaret told the Senate Commerce Com mittee which hearing testi mony on a bill to strengthen regulations on radiation de vices. "It is appalling for these ovens to be permitted to leak at all, let alone for the oven ad vertisements to encourage our children to have fun by learning to cook with them," said Zaret 3.
