On top of it all, this group goes by the name of They Mignt Be Giants and wears two-foot-high fezes onstage. But They Might Be Giants, a Brooklyn-based rock duo, used a bit of genius to get some exposure for its independently released, self-titled album. Instead of going through the orthodox channels, waiting for lis teners to to catch on to their act. the in trademark fezes SErQ named the best independent band at the New York Music Awards ceremony. The Giants credit much of their newfound recognition to Dial a Song.

"In general, audiences are much smarter than your average record company or radio station thinks they are," said guitaristsinger John Flansburgh. "That's why we've been so successful. We've found this whole audience that's more intelligent and more diverse than mainstream media gives it credit for, and they aren't counterculture, or even underground or anything. They just read the want ads a lot."
