VOL. xxm. ESTHERVILLE, EMMET COlprTY, IOWA, SEPT. 10, 1891. NO.

CHICAGOl HENRY G. GRAAF. democratic paper says that Wheeler's boots smell too strong of the barn to be a candidate for governor. If the farmers don't resent this insult this fall we will be greatly mistaken. Prohibition seems to prohibit in Estherville.

The order was delivered to the engineer just as he had his hand on the throttle to start. the month of August Gov. Boies pardoned six more saloonkeepers and violators of the prohibitory law. They were, John Kingler, of Johnson county, Esveeney, of Wapello county, M. Breenan, of the Sixth Judicial district, S.

F. Rockus, of Montgomery county, and Joseph McCabe of Jones county. Boies knows who his friends are and he don't propose any of them shall be whore it will bo impossible for them to vote for him when election time comes. We should think temperance democrats could take a cue from this. Far Life.

Wheeler cannot make a speech is a slur upon the farmers as a class. Very few farmers are in the habit of making public speeches, but that does not prove that, they lack in brains and ability to perform public duties. General Weaver can make speeches ad infinitum, but wo have not discovered any spontaneous movement to make him Governor. Governor Boies would bo better off politically, to-day if ho had made fewer speeches. What the people want in tho Governor is executive ability and Mr.

Wheeler is fairly eloquent in that lingion Hawkeye. it was loaded" came near resulting fatally to a little 3-year old son of Gottlieb Beck last Tuesday morning. As we understand it Mr. Beck had been hunting the previous day and on returning sot the gun in the corner, leaving in the gun a loaded shell but which was supposed to be unprimed having been snapped several times and failed to explode. Tuesday morning one of the boys picked up the gun and playfully pointed it at his younger brother, pulled the trigger, and the supposed harmless shell did the rest.

The gun's muzzle being so near the little fellow's face tho powder burned his cheek in a horrible manner, the charge of shot striking him near the left shoulder, but through the shell not being loaded very heavily or the charge glancing the injury was not as it might otherwise have Jackson Republic. If amed to rich, dew on Reunions.

The Tenth Iowa has a fine cottage on tho fair grounds and the G. A. R. has a spacious headquarters. One of the growing features is tho yearly reunions and campfires.

The pathos of the old army reminiscences often rises to the sublime, and the steadily thinning ranks causes a sorrow which invests the ties of comradeship with ever increasing tenderness. These old soldiers sing and testify with the zeal of members of ''elas's meetings" and claim tho privilege to talk politics, religion or anything else they please. The Iowa fair grounds will witness these reunions as long as there are left any to get together to exchange greetings and revive old memories. Tho alliance also has its meetings, and live stock associations are beginning to establish headquarters. Temperance organizations and others also' have the ir tents and buildings.

The live stock exhibits this year wore indescribable. The excellence and fullness of exhibits at our state fair is proverbial. Machinery in bewildering array designed to make farm work more pleasant and effective held captive tho attention of tired grangers taking their annual outing at the fair. Last Saturday Judson Clark, of Spirit Lake, sixteen years old, was out in a boat on West Okoboji with a companion, and had a gun with them. When they reached the shore young Clark jumped out of the boat first and carelessly took hold of the gun by tho muzzle and drew it towards him. The usual result followed. One of the hammers caught ou the seat or edge of the boat and the gun was discharged, entire load of shot entering his bowels. Ho breathed only twice and was dead.

Young Clark lived with his parents in Spirit Lake. There are three other brothers who are not staying at home. The distressing affair has cast a gloom over tho entire town. Uncle Jerry Busk' has his scientific think of just the right word on the spur of the bacteria in the interests of cabbage heads. This particular breed of bacteria feasts on cabbage worms.

It is said they cun be distributed as needed, and that the way they destroy cabbage worms is a delight to kraut lovers. Tho Orange County Farmer says that buckwheat straw makes tho best mulch for strawberries. This may be a valuable pointer for Iowa. Wo know of Brerner county strawberry growers that have mulched with oat straw and wero much annoyed by the oats growing in the summer, for no oat straw is threshed entirely free from grain. Wonder if buckwheat straw is open to the same objection.

Bro. Jaqua has an article in tho Traer Star Clipper making light of dairying and casting doubts upon the claims of Bro. Wilson and the agricultural editor of this paper that dairying is a paying business. Ho says Wilson never milked a cow except to fill family requirements but admits that we have, and so asks us for information how we can make it pay to milk his cows. Wo givo it up, Bro.

Jaqua. With the cows you follows have down there that have been brought up tosucklo calves five mouths and then go dry, this is not an age for dairying. We writo about dairying and recommend it, but our sermons and our practice are con nected only with cows brought up to be milked. fire box linings are made in sections which are interchangable so that an entire set of linings does not have to be bought when one part burns out. is made Sn honor" and it can be relied upon to give most perfect satisfaction.

Sold only by A. 0. PETERSOH CO. Boiea and His Sugar. Milwaukee Sentinel: Last year when Governor Boies was stumping Iowa, he carried with him bottle filled with the darkest and worst- looking sample of raw sugar that he could obtain.

la the course of his speeches he would exhibit this bottle and tell his audience that such was the sugar that the Republicans proposed should be eaten by the common people. They had put that kind of sugar on the free list, but imposed a duty on refined sugars for the benefit of the sugar trust. Since that time the people of Iowa have an opportunity to learn by actual experience the effect of Republican legislation upon the price of this important article, which enters so universally into daily consumption, and the cheapness of which is more important to the poor man than the rich. They can now buy twenty pounds of the best refined sugar for $1 and they will feel little respect for the demogague who attempted to impose upon them by resorting to falsehood. or variety of styles of anything before known, As our readers are awaro, different manufacturers have their own specialties.

One has a tilting power permitting oiling and other attention without climbing tho tower. By unlocking tho mast post at the bottom, the mast is left free to tilt and bring tho wheel to the ground, the movement being controlled by a small rope. Others have metal towers which are of course not subject to decay like wood. Some have metal wheels and some have vanes of either wood or steel, while others have no vanes. Some are "geared back," the wheel making two or throe revolutions to one stroke of the pump.

Some have a cam action anil uso two revolutions of tho whool for tho up stroke, and one moro for tho down stroke, making the pumping action slow and steady. And the noticeable thing this year is the patterning of so many manufacturers after the most striking points of other makers. The metal whool is gaining very fast, as it permits being curved to utilize the wind force best, and the small wheel constructed BO as to revolve fast but geared back to give a slow, strong pump stroke is growing in popularity so much that this style is being adopted, with different modification, by several manufacturers. M. W. ATWOOD, Estherville, la. The most rapid method of testing milk appears to be that of Dr. Baker Smith of England.

It is also tho cheapest. Sixty estimations can be made in an hour, at the cost of a farthing each. The tost employed is the permanganate of potassium, a substance which under various names is largely used as a disinfectant. One grain of it is dissolved in a half pint of water to which a teaspoonful of strong sulphuric acid is added. Diluted as the solution is, its pink color is quiet distinct and the quantity thus made is sufficient for more than sixty samples of milk.

A teaspoonful of the solution is put in a teat tube and to this the milk to be estimated, diluted with ten times its volume in water, is added drop by drop until the color disappears. An ordinary dropping bottle or a granulated measure may be used. Genuine samples are taken to establish standards. The claim is made, says Practical Fanner, that the albumin- oid principles of full milk, skim-milk and buttermilk, may all be estimated by this method; that so may those contained in flour, grain and bread after dissolving them in. potash.

As a general rule the matted row system of raising strawberries is to bo preferred. The hill system has some advantages, says ''National Stockman," especially for some varieties and where labor is plenty. But in the usual way the matted rows are more satisfactory. The plants are set out in rows 3J to 4 feet apart, and 13 to 18 inches distant in the row. The cultivator should start as soon as the plants are fairly established, at first working pretty close up to them without disturbing them, runners begin to push out the space between tho rows is to be narrowed until the rows spread to 15 or 20 inches.

When considered wide enough, any additional runners extending into the cultivated ground are to be treated us weeds; and in tho meantime any woods making their appearance among the strawberry plants are to bo taken out with a hoe, or the hand. In this way the plants will make good growth and be ready to give a profitable crop the succeeding summer. But protection in winter must not be overlooked. Straw, or corn fodder, or forest leaves, should be spread over the whole surface as soon as winter has fairly set in. Two inches or so in depth is sufficient, and if the leaves are used Vrush or something of the kind will! be needed I (Continued ou last page-) HARDIE RAE, Leaders in ESTHERVILLE, IOWA, Deere, Case, and Norwegiai Plows are the best manufactured and only place they can be bought is stand.
