Kramer says it's hogwash. "I never went out and played with a hangover," Kramer said Thursday. The quarterback also had some advice for his former teammate. "One thing you've got to realize," Kramer said, "is that if you're gonna write a book and talk about other people, you'd better be the last person to write one. These things have a way of coming back to haunt you." Gruesome twosome According to Britain's official thoroughbred guides, We're in the Money and English River don't stand much chance of winning their races Friday.

They're both listed as dead. But We're in the Money, mistakenly declared dead three days ago, will line up at Ascot And English River, whose death was announced by the official form lxxk after a fall lust season, will run at Nottingham. We're in the Money was listed as dead in the racing form because of a clerical error. "It turned out that another trainer's secretary had sent a telex with the wrong horse on it," said the horse's trainer, Graham Roe, "It was a nasty three or four hours before I found out (the horse) was all right." Too bad the horses aren't running against each other Friday. We could root for a dead heat they absorb so much said Gayle, who has an education degree from Ohio State.

His "Fit by Five" school had better be good: Teammat3 Mike Singletary and Dave Duerson have enrolled their children. Creighton vs. sleaze Creighton University basketball couch Tony Barone is fed up with the sleazy image of college athletics and decided to do something about it For starters, his players will spend Thanksgiving working in a soup kitchen for the homeless. The fourth-year coach also announced the formation of the Creighton Basketball Pride Club, which will donate 20 percent of its membership dues to assist homeless people in Omaha. "I'm tired of reading about the problems that athletes cause on the NCAA level," Barone said "I'm tired of hearing that players accepted money, tired of hearing about a player who had 19 gold chains and wanted 30 gold chains.

"I'm sick of the world of athletics specifically, the world of intercollegiate basketball being criticized for a few idiots." Barone said he hopes to sign up 10,000 members for the club, which will carry an annual membership fee of $5. Kramer vs. Rashad Don't invite Tommy Kramer and Ahmad Rashad to the same Christmas party this year. In his recently released book, "RASHAD: Vikes, Mikes, and Something on the Backside," Rashad writes that Minnesota quarterback Tommy Kramer had "an excessive fondness for the sauce." "Kramer, like Bobby Layne, would go out with a monstrous hangover and play the game of a lifetime," writes liashad, a wide receiver for the Vikings until 1982 and now an NBC sportscaster. "That's why he got away with some DrtvtT Country-faam Pts.

The Monterey-area road course, which hosted Grand Prix motorcycle racing for the first time last spring, is likewise an excellent site for a World Driving Championship event Following a successful track renovation that extended its length to just over the i F-1 minimum of 2.2 miles, it appears inevitable that international auto racing of the highest order will come to in the wake of the successful motorcycle venture, if. which drew a reported 80,000 fans to the track April 10. fr The current scheme calls changing the site of the Detroit Grand Prix to Laguna. Detroit has not been a good site because of a severely limited layout which precludes passing, making for extraordinarily dull racing. Plus, the organization behind F-l racing the Formula One Constructors -Association (FOCA) and its chief i Bernie Ecclestone has long sought a return to the West Coast after failed efforts to remain part of the Long Beach Grand Prix.

Six years ago, the LBGP switched from F-l to Indy-cars, which could be "transported and raced at a fraction of the cost. This move saved the financially strapped LBGP but totally embarrassed FOCA and F-l racing in general. UCH IS the core of a primary snag between FOCA and Laguna: Should F-lracingcometo the track, Laguna's successful series of Indy-car races may have to come to an end. FOCA and Championship Auto Racing Teams I (CART), Indy-car racing's governing body, are heated and 'irreconcilable rivals. There might i ,1 not enough room for both groups at the same venue.

Plus, Laguna's late Fall Indy-car ft dates would be in jeopardy. Just as the Grand Prix motorcycles started 'their 1988 season in Japan and stopped at Laguna on their way to Europe, the reverse would be a likely course for F-l cars, which would probably stop at Laguna at the tail-end of their season from Europe on their way to Australia and Japan. There is no question. For F-l racers to grace the asphalt at Laguna Seca, CART may have to be summarily dismissed. Rogers sued by crash associated press Mi-day slap into producing this tremendously successful edition of the magazine." Remember when people read SI for the storieB? And we quote "We're the best team with a 10-1 record since Chicago was, but we hardly get the recognition.

But that's OK, because we don't want a lot of people moving here. We're going to need a lot of room to dance in the streets." Buffalo Bills fan Eric Demme. Now it's Joe Morris. A running buck who retired from the NFL in 1969 has been charged yet again with impersonating a current NFL player in order to cash forged checks. Israel Lang, 46, a former reserve player for the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams, was arrested Tuesday in Hackensack, N.J., after persuading United Jersey Bank to cash a check by passing himself off as Morris, the Giants' all-time leading rusher, police said. It was Lang's 24th arrest since retiring in 19G9. Police said Lang knew Morris had an account at the bank and called, saying he wanted to open an account for his father-in-law, named Israel Lang.

The imposter was arrested after a second attempt to pass a $950 check, police said. Bearing up well Normally, Shaun Gayle would be spending these autumn days crushing wide receivers and other fools who venture into the Chicago Bears defensive secondary. But the defensive back has been out most of the season with a broken bone in his neck, so to fill the empty days, Gayle opened his own business a preschool specializing in physical fitness. Gayle, 26 and unmarried, runs the school for youngsters ages 2 to 5 in the affluent Chicago suburb of Highland Park, 111. "Their minds are like sponges, er FROM EXAMINER STAFF ANO WIRE REPORTS ONTREAL CANADIENS forward Stephane Richer has been suspended for 10 games with out pay as the result of a stick-swinging incident that injured New York Islanders defenseman Jeff Norton, the NHL said Friday.

Richer hit Norton in the mid section during the second period of Wednesday night's game. Norton was carried from the ice on a stretcher, but Richer was not penalized. Norton spent the night in a Montreal hospital, where doctors originally feared he might have suf fered either broken ribs or a perforated liver. He was released Thurs day after initial X-rays were described as "negative, but inconclusive." Richer, who was summoned be fore NHL executive vice-president Brian O'Neill on Thursday, claimed he was trying to play the puck, and not trying to injure Norton. "I didn't mean to hurt him," Richer said.

"It was an accident" O'Neill, however, didn't see things that way. "In considering the appropriate penalty, it is my judgment that Richer deliberately swung his stick at his opponent with sufficient force so as to cause serious injury to Norton," said O'Neill, who was at the game. The Pittsburgh Penguins' high-scoring defenseman Paul Coffey will be out at least 10 to 14 days because of a badly bruised right shoulder he suffered as a result of a hard check. Toronto defenseman Brad Marsh propelled Coffey into the boards late in the second period Wednesday night as the Maple Leafs were slapping their way to an 8-5 victory over visiting Pittsburgh. Coffey was examined by a team doctor Thursday.

Coffey and center Mario Lemieux have combined to give the Penguins one of the most efficient power plays in the league. FOOTBALL Washington Redskins Kelvin Bryant, Charles Mann, Monte Coleman and Darrell Green missed practice Thursday, and their status for Monday's game in San Francisco remained in question. i PONTIAC, Mich.
