'FT-1 if Thursday, February 27, 1986 EQ San Francisco Examiner I Michael Dougan Television 1 11 1 (. i ii Jack Klugman Not all that happy when his teen-age son moves in after a seven-year separation vorced father whose comfortably solitary lifestyle is demolished hen his teen age son, Matthew (John Stamost, moves in after a seven year estrangement. They become rcacquainied in an atmo-f i of civil hostility. A dramatic tension is implicit ithin their relationship, and from this the humor -springs. At least, that's what the Titers have In mind.

The show, to be kind, needs work. Tonight's opener, airing at 8:30 p.m. on Channel 4, is a "sneak preview" to entice a potential audience before the series debuts in its regular 8 p.m. Monday time slot next week. But this episode is set some time after the kid returns to papa's arms, and the audience may not understand the story setup.

That, presumably, will be seen Monday, though a spokesman atTaft Entertainment, where the show is produced, could not say for sure. "NBC is still messing around with it," he explained. "You Again?" contains potential- "You Again?" aims at a more honest portrayal of problems far where on network TV. Tonight's show concerns the apparent pregnancy of Matthew's punk girl- friend. The writers chicken out In the final scene, Injecting a twist that softens the concept, but at least' they took a stab at it.

That, too, makes "You Again?" attractive. But Klugman must restrain his performance if his character is to -be believed. And improvements in the riting arc called for. Too many ostensibly funny lines spring from the animosity between these two characters, locking the show into a single, and potentially damn- ing, dimension. "You Again?" could evolve into a genuinely entertaining comedy.

The question is whether viewers will give it the time it needs, and if its creators will rise to the call. But as it stands now, "You Again?" is not apt to reappear on NBC's fall schedule. spring from love, and Willows obviously adores his kid, though he's loath to admit It. Matthew reveals that he knows he was conceived before his parents were married: "I'm a love child." Willows replies: "There as nothing lovable about you." Later, Matthew asks for a hug. "You're supposed to hug your children," he tells his dad.

"Who says?" snaps Willows. "Psychiatrists," Matthew explains. "They think it's a good idea." "Fine," Willows retorts. 'Then let them hug you." Are you laughing yet? fcrs from an overdose of earnestness. Everyone on this show is trying so hard it hurts.

At times, their enthusiasm resonates with desperation. They must make this show work. It has got lo be funny. This is especially true of Klugman, a talented veteran ith two hit series Odd Couple" and under his belt Klugman Injects excess energy into his lines, crushing the subtlety that could make them work. (It's a style he perfected In those other shows, where hysterical behavior made a modicum of sense; here it's simply distracting.) Stamos plays his part in a lower key, ith some success.

1 lis Matthew is an easy going, unpretentious fellow who gently tolerates the old man's histrionics. Matthew possesses the one quality that greater sitcom characters falo Bill" comes to mind) died for lacking likability. More interesting and amusing than either of these chaps is Enid Thompson, Willows' English maid. Thompson is portrayed by Elizabeth Bennett, who filled the same role in the British original. Bennett's familiarity with the character is evident; she's far more comfortable as Enid than are her co-stars in their new, and still a wk-w ard, personac.

In an era of renewed enthusiasm for family sitcoms all, like "The Cosby Show," simply hip versions of "Father Knows Best" it's refreshing to see someone turn the concept on its ear by injecting real resentment into the living room. Willows is clearly ambiguous toward his offspring. He is still stinging from the day, which he describes in an opening narration: "My ife ran off with another guy and my son, Matthew, decided to go ith her."
