The anti-smoking movement led to a new strategy for Topol, which was the 'smoker's toothpaste' Ids. "In the 70s, their market share began to deteriorate, and other products usurped what they had. It could have been a hopeless thing," he says. "The real problem they asked us to solve, with all these brands, was they were products that had fallen into disuse.

This was really a turnaround campaign." But it was for the company's widely known diet product, a caramel-like appetite suppressant called Ayds, that Lowe Marschalk faced a particularly tough challenge. Fifty years ago, when the product was born, there was no such thing as acquired Immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS. "Here you have the greatest pestilence the world has seen in 500 years working its way over the planet," says MacDaniels. The prod-. uct name was now a major liability, he says, and the most pressing question for Dep officials and the ad agency's staff was whether to change it MacDaniels says the diet product has a long-established group of loyal followers.

Company officials believed that changing the name entirely would threaten that loyalty and might mean a loss of those longtime users. "There Is a really strong market for Ayds, with no advertising, as it is now," says MacDaniels. "But they wanted to make a move and come out from behind a screen. That means you're going to try and convince people who may have heard of the AIDS disease, but may not know about the product "Once you make a decision not to hide, to keep the name, you've got to do some advertising around it" The decision was made to preface the old name with the word diet, and to remarket the product as Diet Ayds. The key to this campaign is "not to be clever and cute," MacDaniels says.

"The rules must be set for this kind of advertising. It should be' conscientious, beneficial not the fun stuff we did with Dep." The print ads used the headline: mean the product or service is selling. As might be expected, many commercials shouldn't have been entered, and the Judges who cut the field to a manageable number 390 by the end of the week dont mind saying so. "It was depressing what we saw in the beginning (in the initial screening process)," Burt Manning, J. Walter Thompson Co.

Another judge said: "We saw lots of junk, which we got rid off Immediately. However, in cleaning up the field, somehow we knocked out commercials" that deserved to be in the competition.

One of these worthy TV spots was Lipton Tea's "Little Old Ladies" commercial, produced by Lintas USA, which had been an award-winner in the United States. For the record, 32 Gold Lions (the United States won 11, Burnett taking 3 alone), 57 Silver Lions and 74 Bronze Lions were doled out at this year's event meaning that the odds of winning were about 1 in 20. With judges under instruction to give out Lions, regardless of quality, in all categories, ranging from alcoholic drinks to public service, those aren't bad odds. And with an entry costing only a few hundred dollars, it's very easy to enter Cannes and brag about doing so, especially because few people will ever know that your commercial was quickly cut or almost made the short list CANNES, France What was billed as the world's best collection of TV advertising left many observ-ers and even the judges yawning at the International Advertising Film Festival. To be sure, a number of the Gold Lion awards earned by agencies, clients and production houses represented standout advertising, including the Bartles Jaymes spots produced by Hal Riney Partners of San Francisco, a Cheer commercial from Leo Burnett USA and a Volkswagen commercial from DDB Needham London that won the Grand Prix award.

But the lion's share of last month's top-award winners were ordinary or slightly above average advertising at best, something you would not expect from the finalists that survived a week-long elimination process that started with a staggering 3,462 commercials entered in this annual competition. At $305 an entry, this annual film festival adds up to big business. The number of entries has increased yearly, with the 1988 total up nearly 20 percent from the 2,895 entered in 1987. Agencies from the United States entered 743 commercials, or 21 percent of the total. To agencies, winning a Gold Lion can showcase the firm's creative resources and subsequently attract new business and sometimes retain an account even if a product isn't selling up to the client's expectations.

"It won an award" is a favorite response of those on the agency side when the firm might be having trouble with the client. But a creative award doesn't necessarily should be just as careful about your teeth," he says. And Cuticura, the medicated soap, is now aimed at teen-agers as a "cure all" for skin problems, MacDaniels says. Updating a product's image has to be done carefully, MacDaniels says. "You need a strategy you can't take down straw men," he "How to Make Dieting Sweet and Simple." Though Ayds was an advertising challenge, MacDaniels says it was actually tougher to develop campaigns for other products, such as Topol and Lavoris. Topol was once marketed as "the smoker's tooth polish." Ads showed smokers blowing into a handkerchief to illustrate the stains that end up on their teeth. Smokers, however, are an ever-shrinking audience, and any association with them is as appetizing as bad breath.

'Topol had fallen into a very limited consumption pattern," says MacDaniels. "Only the older smokers who remembered the product were using it" Today, ads aimed at a younger, nipper crowd show a sleek high-fashion model, dressed in white, on white background, with the headline: "Dressed to the teeth." "We made the obvious connection that you pay attention to everything you're wearing, and you says. "Our idea was to bring some vigor and warmth and style to these products."
