consideration of Utah bo i tig ceded the big strip of land north of the Colorado river whioh now belongs to thn territory Kearns got mixed in his dates and now declares that he did not vote in the affirmative on the Nhw Mexico statehood mensurp The Utah people have been trying for years to get possession of our northern strip and are willing at any time to stoop to any low down measure to get it Utah is large enough as it is but if the people of that state really want more land why are they not bouest aud offer pay for it as honest people should Mo have county has a large indebtedness- as has Cocouino the two counties from which the lands are proposed to be taken and thee counties are will ing to part with them in consideration of the payment of all outstanding debts We do not believe that con giess will ever partition this territory unless with the consent of our people The body of a man who had presumably been dead two or three weeks found in the old stone corral near Coyote Hole- by George A Bouelli and Albert Teeter who were huntiug horfces last Thuday afternoon The find was reported to the officers and the sheriff aud coroner immediately made an investigation The body wai that of an aged mnu and death ap pared to have been from natural oaujes It was wrapped in bedding but animals had eaten away the flesh from the face and neck and one aim was entirely goue Some clothing was lying near the body aud a saok con taiutd olotbiug and two cans of sardines and can corned beef Nothing tMt would identify the man in any way could be found Near the body was a railroad ticket dated January 11 19J5 from Goffs to Needles There was not even a jack knife in the pock ets The body was brought to town and buried in the cemetery yesterday The statehood bill is in a badly muddled shape in the Senate It was supposed that Arizona was drop ped out of the running and that New Mexico was to go in as a single state but Senator Ke rns whose vote was re oordod for the measure enters a vigor ous protest and claims his in the negative If the senate takes this view of it the whole matter will be left just where it was before the vote was taken Koarns wants a slice of Arizona and in his anxiety to have an amendment to that effect tacked onto the statehood bill voted with the majority and the aot making New Mexico a state passed the senate aud was sent to the home for its concurrence No action for the recall the measure has yet been tak en but it is expeoted that the bUl will be recalled nd the measure will fail on a tie vote We are in receipt of a copy of a pamphlet issued by the New Mexico Bureau of Immigration entitled To the Land oi Sunshine The work is well done aud the book replete with interesting facta regarding resources of our sister territory and embellished with handsome half tone views of places of interest Copies cau be had by applying to the bureau One of the big freight engines had a narrow ecapo from going over an embankment in the canyon below town a few days ngo As it wa9 the tender had to be dropped into the wash to Bave the big machine and the wrecker has been making an effort to pick it up the past two days Mrs Esther Starkey has purchased from Ralph Bulkloy his interest in the Tail Holt butcher shop in Kingman Mrs Starkey owns a large cattle ranch in this county and will be able to supply the market with beef Rogers superintendent of missions will hold services in the cburoh tomorrow at 11a and 7 All are invited Mrs Ida Crozier has gone to her old home in Berkely to look after important busiuess matters KINGMAN ARIZONA FEBRUARY 11 1905 Last Monday afternoon one of the most terrific rains in the history of thl part of Arizona fell and in a short time the washes were running rivers of water The railroad grade through he canyon south of town was agaiu taken out and it took several hundred men until late Monday afternoon to make repairs At Pranoonia the grades were carried out and one bridge near Yucca was badly damaged All available men on the Sinfa Pe between Selig man and Barstow weie rushed to the breaks and worked night and day ou repairs Quick work was done in re pairing the damage below town aud at Pranconia The rains were geueral aud all the railroads in the territory suffered The Southern Pacific was washed out in Arizona aud California aud the Prescott and Phenix was a heavy sufferer Andrews of the firm of Andrews Doron Co Los Angeles who are promoting the railroad aud smelter deals passed through Kingman a few days ago from New vork to Los Angeles He states that it may be some time before repairs are made on the Arizona Utah railroad but that as soon as ground is broken for the smeller and woik of construction well under way the work of repairing the railroad will be begun The people of Chloride are badly in need of railroad facilities and it is too bud to delay repairs on the line connecting that town with the maiu line of the Santa Fe Judge Kibby of Phenix has beeu appointed governor oi the terri tory to succceed Alex Brodie Judge Kibby is one of the excellent meu of the territory and all daises of people will be pleased with his ap pointment He is heart and soul with the people of the territory and their interests and will make a live man in the office No man mentioned to succeed Gov Brodie is better fitted to fill his shoes Harris of Haokberry was in Kingman a few days ago as a witness in theexamin tion of Big George a Wall apai Indian who is aocu ed of murdering another Indian named Johnny Shipp Mr Harris recently located a gold mine over near the Cottonwood and is preparing to begin work ou it The miue was at one time owned by James Carter now of Gold Road and produced a large amount of gold The Emporium has just opened up one of the largest and handsomest lines of ladies dtess suitings ever brought to northern Arizona Ladies phonld visit the store and examine these goods before sending away for samples The store is stocked with everything needful to ladies and children The stock of gentlemens furnishings oaunot ba excelled anywhere Don Catlin superintendent of one of the big mining groups in the Eldorado Canyou oountry was in Kingman several days this week on his way from San Francisco to the Canyon He is to begin active operations on the mines of the oomp ny as soon as he reaches the Canyon and will soon install a milling plant The Samoan miue is now using a new drill bit with its hammer drills and getting splendid satisfaction Work in the drifts and orossouting is progressing rapidly and it is probable that another lift of 100 faet will soon be sunk The mine is looking well having a large amount of high grade ore blocked out Mrs A Gracey Mrs Naylor and brother A Gracey came in from Eldorado Canyon yesterday and took the west bound evening train for Pasadena Mrs Naylor is a sister of Charles Gracey and they had not met in many years until a few weeks ago Mrs Naylor is from Essex Ontario Canada During the storms of the past week 278 inches of rain fell in Kingman The heaviest rain was that of Saturday night when one inch of rain fell Not since th great storms of 1889 has so much water fallen in winter as fell during the past three months Theo Lamb returned yesterday from a trip to Los Angeles Mr Lamb is superintendent of the New Jersey mine at Chloride Sheriff Wilter Brown has gone to Gold Road to look after offioial business Miss Moore the Astrologist will give a free lecture tonight in the Pink cottage on Beale street All are invited Arizonas Friend In a speech before the senate of the United States in which he opposed the joint statehood bill and favored statehood for Arizona Senator Tim mons of North Carolina paid the folj lowing merited tribute to the people of Arizona They are the same class of people who bave gone out from the states and settled all the other territories of this coun ry whether it was the northwest teiritory or the Louisiana purchase territory or the Gadsden purchase territory The same class of our own people who in the past have felled the forests braved the wild beasts and the insalubrity of climate and other Harassing and hampering conditions of ftontier and territorial life and erected great states and commonwealths out of these once wild wastes of forest and desolation The people like their predecess ors in frontier lite have not left their homes and broken up the associations of a life time because of indolence but benaut of ambition They have not gone out there because of their weakness but because of their strength They have not gone out there because of cowardice in meeting the conditions of life aud battling with them but they bave goue out there be cause of their courage in dealing with the problems and hardships of life They may be called adventurers but they are men of courage men of grit men of determination men of ambition meu whose ambition and determination for better things would not permit them to stay home and put up with the ordinary but led them to brave hardships amid new and untried conditions in a strange land in the hope that they might achieve for them selves aud their potterity better conditions and things than the old home bad to offer to those who had nothing to build upon except brawn and muscle guided by courage intelligence and character To ay that this class people and they constitute 8j per cent of the people of tbe tenitory of Arizona today are not capable of self government that they do not possess sufficient virtue and iutelligence to discharge those functions to repudiate aud deny the experience of our whole history in the settlement of territories aud the development out of them of great and powerful commonwealth About thirty meu are employed at the Blue Ridge mine and that property is fat becomiug one of the bonanzas of San Praucisco district The ten stamp mill is being erected and will be dropping stamps within forty days The San Francisco district is one of the liveliest spots in the territory of Arizona just now Huudreds of men are employed in the mines and mills besides hundreds more prospecting tbe hills and ravines for bidden treasures John Withers came in from Los Angeles last Tuesday murning having been held up by shouts for several hours He reports that the prospect for a big smelter in Kingman looks good to him Austin came in from Lor Angeles last Tuesday and will probably again take up his residence here He has sold bis interests in Los Angeles and is looking around for a new location The following letters remain uncalled for
