Mayes, the NFL's fourth-leading rusher with 1,292 yards through 15 games, is scheduled for surgery Tuesday. The league will name his replacement on the NFC squad. "I was going to get operated on regardless of whether I got picked or not," Mayes said Friday.

Cisowski signs DALLAS The Dallas Cowboys signed seven free agents for next season, including tackle Steve Cisowski of Santa Clara. The others were wide receiver Carl Aikens of Northern Illinois, wide receiver-kick returner Vince Courville of Rice, wide receiver Ray McDonald of Florida, wide receiver Leland Melvin of Richmond, linebacker Steve Savard of Northwest Missouri and tackle Reggie Smith of Kansas. with 66 catches for 1,001 yards. Morris ran 22 times for 115 and finished the season with a club-record 1,516 yards on 341 attempts. The Giants finished with their highest point total since a 62-10 victory over Philadelphia in 1972.

New York's 21 points in the first quarter came on a 24-yard pass from Simms to Bavaro, Tom Flynn's 3f-yard return of a blocked punt and Morris' 3-yard run. Flynn, a safety waived by Green Bay at mid-season, had the fourth blocked punt against Green Bay in five weeks. "It's like poetic justice," said Flynn, who was signed by the Giants two weeks ago as a replacement for the injured Terry Kinard. "Hopefully, it was created by the good Lord and it was his way of showing I had something coming to me." Simms completed 18 of 25 passes for 245 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Simms finished with 21 touchdown passes in ri Ylml i ().

I The New York Giants will spend their holidays at home and their playoff games at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, J. Phil Simms threw two touchdown passes to Mark Bavaro and Joe Morris ran for 115 yards Saturday to help the Giants clinch the NFC's best record with a 55-24 victory over the visiting Green Bay Packers. If they want to beat us, they have to come to our house and play," outside linebacker Lawrence Taylor said after the Giants completed their winningest season with their ninth straight triumph. "It feels good to go home for the holidays and come back," inside linebacker Harry Carson added. "Everybody goes home for the holidays but we get to come back." The Giants, 14-2 and champions of the NFC East, guaranteed they will be home for the conference title game if they win their divisional playoff game.

The Chicago Bears will finish 14-2 if they defeat Dallas Sunday, but the Giants would be home against Chicago because of a better conference record than the Bears. The team with the home-field edge in the NFC playoffs has gone to the Super Bowl the past five years. New York will play either the Los Angeles Rams or 49ers Jan. 3 or 4 in thJ divisional playoffs. The Giants, who won 13 games in 1929 and 1930, won 14 games in a season for the first time.

The Packers, whose 0-6 start this season was the worst in the team's 66-year history, finished 4-12 for their lowest victory total since 1977. After nearly blowing a 24-0 lead, the Giants had a fun fourth quarter against Green Bay. Coach Bill Par-cells put in his second team and little-used running back Lee Rou-son ran for touchdowns of 10 and 21 yards as the Giants scored the final 24 points. "It was really fun, we came back to put a whipping on them and that was important," Rouson said. The Packers thought the Giants had too much fun.

They were upset at Jeff Rutledge's 18-yard run on a fake field goal to set up Rouson's second TD and objected to Raul Allegre's 26-yard field goal with 2:07 left. "To say you have to give the second team experience is bull," Green Bay guard Ron Hallstrom said. 'They had 16 games and four preseason games to get them ready. I didn't think Parcells is that kind of coach who would burn it in your face." The Packers made obscene gestures toward Parcells in the final minutes. Parcells, however, said he was in a no-win situation.

"I was just trying to keep the ball," he said of the fake field goal. "You don't want to go out with young kids and give up. "If I fall on the ball it's embarrassing, if I go for the first down it's embarrassing and if I kick the field goal it's embarrassing. I can't win there." Bavaro caught five passes for 59 yards to become the first Giants tight end to go over 1,000 in a season. Bavaro finished the season Associated Prpss Giants' Tom Flynn blocks a punt by Packers' Bill Renner "571 i r- SERVICE SPECIAL Offer good on most cars thin 123186 1 With this coupon at participating locations.
